My father-in-law told me about 2 old willys Jeeps that he found while he was out checking gas pipelines about a year ago. Well I was in the area today and here is what I found.

So how rare are the old Ford GP's with this style grill? The guy wants $150 for the Willys and my father-in-law never asked about the GP.

You told me to go get it didn't you? No I don't have it yet. I have been trying to get a hold of the guy all afternoon. There is another guy I know that wants the Willys and I figured while we were there picking that up I would get the GP.

What is a fair price to pay for something like this. What should I be looking at and what is original. I am still trying to get the guy on the phone. It has been sitting for a about 20 years. The last registration on the plates was 1986.

Pay whatever you can afford, just buy it!! That don't look like just ANY old Ford GPW, does the term "rare as t*ts on a bowling ball" mean anything? Sure it'll be expensive to restore, and I'm sure parts will be a nightmare, but that might be a one of a kind, or one of few surviving specimens.

If you end up with the GP and dont want to restore let me know. I will give it a good loving home with plenty of OD paint

It's pre GPW, as in GP. It deserves restoration for sure, and nothing less.

Yeah, even I wouldn't cut that thing up and I went to town on a pretty rare DJ. Don't feel like you HAVE to restore it, though. Lots of stuff like that kicking around museums or cruising shows in "as found" condition. Just do enough to it to make it a runner and call it a "survivor" MB, but leave all the faded paint, rust, and previous owner/billy-bob cobbled stuff about it. There's a lot of documentation about the history of the MB and how they're supposed to look, but don't discount the history of that particular MB. It's probably got a pretty interesting story.

I'm way jealous. The speedo/guage cluster makes me want it all by itself. I bet you can snag it for under $500 if it doesn't run.

    Good luck.

i too will conferm that that is a proto-type ford gp slat-grill. there were aprox 5756 of these units made. this needs to be bought, man do i so envy you.

Restoration or preservation - don't let it rust away. This is a historic vehicle.

<edit> JMO - at this point, it has to be painted. Original paint is cool, but once the paint fails, unless you have a perfectly dry environment (say a garage in Arizona), it's going to continue to rust.

If it was Willys it would be an MA, if it was an MB it would still be cool of course. ;)

If it was an MA it would be the rarest of all jeeps, and the most pricey, and unrestored MA missing a lot of parts sold for over $15,000 about a year ago.

It is a gp however. Which fully restored are selling for about the same price as a fully restored mb/gpw but the parts to restore one cost more. I notice what looks like a cutout in the hood that someone made a box for, probably means it does not have its orginal carb which is the hardest and most expensive part to find, an non rebuilt carb will sell for $5000+
