Warn Rebuild....is It Possible?

There are different ways to mount them. You can sink them into the bumper a bit.

Anything you hang in front of the radiator will impede cooling to some extent. That said, if your cooling system is up to snuff, you won't notice the winch.

I like to mount them low-bottom of winch at the bottom of the bumper. That minimizes air flow obstruction, places no rotational force on the front of the frame horns, and usually gives you a slightly better pull angle. The higher the winch is mounted, the greater the downward force applied. Not usually what you want dragging something out of the mud.

A couple of photos of the latest iteration of the winch mount on my 3B. It is set up so either the 8274 or the older Belleview/Warns can be mounted.

 

I know they are a new style but I like the Warn vr8000 I put on the CJ6. I have had M8000 Warn winches previously and they've all been great to me and they don't look all modern like a Xeon. I think I paid less than 475 for my vr8000 and it has worked great. I use it more for utility and log work but it has dragged quite a few vehicles so far with no issues. Much slower than an 8274 but cheaper and lighter too.

 

Absolutely nothing wrong with an M8000 or the equivalent VR series. I used an M8000 for a few years. My only complaint was how slow it was, but I was used to an 8274. It would just keep pulling and pulling and pulling.

 

I got a used MX8000 that was pretty dirty. I called Warn and the fellow emailed me a rebuild manual which made it pretty clear how to clean and lube.
Took it all apart, cleaned, re painted components, greased, re assembled. Control box looked bad but worked OK. Ordered some stickers. Got an new wire rope. Works fine now. Just a matter of assembling the sets of planetary gears correctly. You can do it.

 

Going from a 8274 to a m8000 sure it will be slow.

But M8000 is still faster than all the china crap out-there.

 

I'd testify for the 8274 and even used, they are simple to rebuild. I'll post pics of my fresh rebuild later. Fast and reliable. Looking for another one right now, to go on my 55 cj5.

I kept mine down low in behind the bumper. I wanted to make sure I had good air flow going to the 4.3 Vortec. I think its important for any motor to have good flow, even 4 bangers.

 

Google "8274 winch rebuild" , "Bellvue rebuild", "5687 rebuild" or the same here. Lots of work around's on the 5687 if you are not concerned with originality. Good luck!
