I am sensing that the difference here is the "independent registration office" vs. the DMV. One of the benifits of living in a more populated area I guess.

    Progress......
The firewall will be plated and fresh holes will be transferred and drilled after we finish mocking everything up.
We got the brake master cylinder mocked up and semi installed last night. Tonight the clutch master is on the to do list.
The jeep came with a gm auto column, but we may go the summit tilt column route for a cleaner overall finish. I do have a line on a cj7 column, which would match the current cutout in the dash, but we are a bit apart on price.

Can anyone ID this slave cylinder?
I know that Both GM and Ford used something similar to this.

You're already this far, put a brake vacuum booster in there

Noticed the vin and build date on the dash. Do you mind giving that info up for the serial # data? Great Jeep by the way!

I asked him if he wanted to go power or manual brakes. Steve said that after driving mine with small caliper discs and 10" drums, he is confident that his larger caliper discs and 11' drums will stop it. He also wants to keep it simple.
I will get a pic in the next couple days. Build date is July 1970
    VIN number: 8305037 366414
It never dawned on me, but if it was built in July of 1970 it would most likely be a 70 not a 71. Maybe it was not sold until 71 and so that's how it was titled?

July could be either year. In that era, regular production ended in the summer so that the factory could tool up for the new models and make enough cars to supply the dealerships with enough cars to represent the new model year. Changes for the '71 year were minor. They changed the bellhousing design from an adapter and Buick bell to a one-piece bell for 1971. Unfortunately that is not going to help you, with the SM465 swap, unless an original adapter came in the pile of parts. Isn't the radiator and radiator mounting for the grille different for 1971? Likely there are other subtle changes that I have not heard of.

Yes, this has the same grill shell as my 69. The PO sourced a manual trans buick bell from a car when he installed the SM420. We will be leaving the SM420 in there. Actually I forgot to mention that we pulled to top cover on the 420. I was pleasantly surprised to find it rust free and full of oil! Dropped the shift cane in and it ran through all the gears perfect.

its really hard to hurt an sm420. One problem I had with the sm420/buick bell/dauntless flywheel was that because of the thickness of the flywheel it pushes the clutch friction disk hub back and it pushes the hub onto the beginning of the splines of the input shaft. The clutch would not release. I had to machine the friction disk hub to allow free movement. If this setup has not been run and you can't get the clutch to release this may be something to look at.

That cowl is just fine. Visit W PA and you'll wonder why we all have flaky brown fender flares on anything over 10 yr old.

I wonder what the "98" on the firewall means? Mine is marked "69" in the same place and in the same style.

I guessed it was some kind of build code.

Cj7 pedals are now mounted! We ended up heating and bending them in two locations. Just below the hole for the MC plunger we bent them back, then about half way down the pedal arm we bent them back forward to match the firewall angle. We are at full plunge on the MC when the pedal hits the floor. The angle for the pad is off just a bit, I will most likely cut them off and reattach them in a more comfortable position. They still have a bit of fine tuning bending to be done once the firewall is reinforced and the seat is installed. Now that I have done one set, I now see where I could improve them, these will work great, but that's how it usually goes.
All bending was done in a vise with heat, I forgot to take a pic of the pedal before we installed them. I will snap a pic when we pull them back out.

I figured that Steve needed a little motivation on his project. You guys all know that nothing puts the tingle in the dingle like hearing your project run. Engine looks like heck, but has good compression and oil pressure. Be sure to crank it up. Manifolds with about 12" of exhaust pipe. :D
