Driving Me Crazy!!!!!!

    This is what is done....

    HEI installed, carb rebuilt by Guaranteed Carbs.

    Issue's:

    Start up runs smooth as silk, timing set at 8 BTDC, RPM at 800
    Hook up the vacuum advance...timing jumps off the chart
    It will run for about a minute or two, then just die.

    When I say die, not like it is starved for fuel, but like when you kill the power.

    My thoughts, (pure shade tree) is that my Alternator is not charging enough to keep the proper energy to the HEI. So we took it and had it tested, tested good.

    Any suggestions would be great.

    Are you using ported vacuum from the carb? That is what you should be plugged into.

    Can you keep it running with the throttle and or choke after you hook up the vacuum advance? There is nothing electrical involved with connecting up the vacuum advance so it's got to be a timing, air/fuel issue.

    Not really.. The HEI vacuum advance is what moves the pick-up coil which is connected to the module by two wires. A break in either of these two wires when moved to the proper position could break the ignition and shut down the engine.

    Vacuum is to the carb.

    Whether I have the vacuum advance is on or not it just quits.

    Going to try and check TDC again and see where that takes me.

    Did get the new headlights today! So there is a positive.

    I spent hours (12) trying to figure out a similar issue and found a break in one of the wires inside the rubber grommet to the HEI housing. Use a voltmeter to check continuity from end to end while wiggling the wires to simulate engine vibration.

    Ok focker,

    What is your poison of choice? It was a loose ground inside. The screw that was holding the ground was loose. Screwed it down tight and tried again....purrrrrfect. Except now it appear my alternator is not charging. May have something wrong on the one wire. It was on there when I got it so will have to figure it out.

    The ground under the cap that holds down the condenser? If so...To ensure that your ground stays connected...Drill a small hole through the threads of the ground screw hole, out through the bottom of the distributor. Put a long machine screw through the new hole and lock it in with a nut from underneath the distributor, then connect a ground wire (with eyelets on the both ends) to the new screw with another nut. Obviously the other end connects to a known good ground on the Jeep.

    Make sense?

    Well, now I have no spark at all.

    I pulled the cover of the coil, and the ground wire is not grounded.


    Was going to set the timing and it quite...now no spark.

    Coil go kaput?

    Have power to the coil when key is on. Moved the ground wire to a screw that was showing a ground with tester.

    Maybe. :mad:

    I bought a replacement for mine before I found the bad wire, this made me think I had a bad coil right out of the box. I didn't buy a high end one...I spent something like...$30? Now I have a backup. :)

    Got rid of the resistor? 12 volts to coil? Check with ohm meter from dist body to a good ground. Make sure continuity. Make sure +12 volt on coil pigtail is connected right. Make sure -12 volt in cap body is connected right.

    Check all grounds. Do basics and be sure of them before coil/module etc.

    Nope resistor, 12 volts to coil.

    Well...................

    Put the new coil in still no spark. Top it off on of the screws that holds the coil in, striped out, of course the one with the secondary ground. Now I have to buy a new cap. And I guess a new module............

    Anyone want a jeep mostly done?
