Right turn signal not working

    warning newbie question

What controls the flashing of the right turn signal, the left side is working properly. On the right side, the rear tail light comes on, but does not flash, the right front turn signal does not come on or flash.

check your bulb and grounding and wiring on the right front, good luck

The blinker relay (flasher) depends on load to work. If one of the bulbs on the right side is burnt out, there may not be enough load for it to flash. As per bobo, I would check the bulbs first. Swap them left to right, or use your multimeter to check resistance from the base to each of the pins. I'd also consider replacing the blinker relay.

thanks, I will start with the bulb swap and see where that gets me...

Well I swapped the bulbs, no change, when the right turn signal is turned on, the right tail light is on soild (no flash) and no light on in right front. I will check the front with meter when I have more time.

Also how do I tell if my Jeep (1963) is 6 or 12 volt?

Where is the blinker relay located (just in case)?

Multimeter to the battery posts? Sometimes you can tell by looking at the battery. The bulbs will be labeled as 6V bulbs.

Pull on your park lights and see if they are all working. If the right front is not "ON" but has a known good bulb, then you have a bad ground at the right light. It grounds through the lights mounting studs through the grille. This is assuming you are 12V and bulbs are dual element.

    Most 6V batteries have 3 cell caps/holes, 12V has 6 holes.

Do you have a voltmeter that you can check the circuits? I had a similar problem and had to trace wires from under the dash to the lights. There are plug type splices on the '66 and one of the factory plug splices near the steering gear had gotten cruddy. The wires pull out and have beyonette connectors on them so cleaning and replugging solved the problem. The same connectors are used at each light socket. Be sure they are clean. On mine I could see voltage at the bulb sockets but the bulb wouldnt light because the dirty connectors didnt let enough current through.

I am reading 6.5 volts at both front turn signal sockets, is this correct? Now I cannot get ethier side working. When I turn on the turn signal on ethier side, the rear light goes on when the front buld is not in, when I spin the front bulb into place, the rear light goes out and the front does not light. This is happening on the side that was just working. Two bad front buld (they look and sound ok)?

OK I (the newbie) am frustrated. All my parking lights, headlights and break lights now work, still no turn signals. When I turn on either turn signal, no lights come on, no flashing, front or back. Recall one side was working at one point.

I went to auto zone and asked for a flasher for a 1963 CJ5, they said they had one, I bought it. I took the old one out and compared, they look different. I put the new one in, same results as above.

Not sure what to do at this point, I have looked at the wiring diagram, and see no other components to swap out.

So you have determined that it is a 6V system, right? Did you get a 6V flasher from the parts store? Hate to say it but, maybe the turn signal unit on the column has some sort of issue. I'm not good with the electrical stuff.

6V system was long gone by 1963

6V gone by '63 so, he should be getting more than 6.5V at the turn signal sockets, right?

    Dirty sockets?
Look at the bottom of one of the bulbs. How many terminals do you see there? should be two little brass nubs. If only one then that is a single circuit bulb. The socket and the bulb base must match, or you won't get anything from them.

On the inner drivers side fender is a rectangular block that all of the front light wiring goes to before going to the different head/turn/parking lights.
Check your voltage between each one of those posts and a known good ground (like the negative terminal on the battery its-self) If you should by some really by some odd chance still have a six-volt system (three fill caps on the top of the battery), then yeah... 6.5 volts would be what you have. If you have the twelve-volt system (6 caps) then 12.3 to 12.6 volts.

could be you need to run a separate ground to your lights to get things to work.

I'd advise you approach this systematically. You've tried the easy fixes ... now start tracing the wires with your multimeter or test light to isolate the problem.

Ok, I had same type of problem with my 69. all lights worked but no signals blinking. I got so frustrated, I said let me try this just for fun. I took a piece of wire and grounded my turn signal switch at the colum to my dash, I have the old metal signal housing which im assuming you have as well. Low and behold it worked. I put a dif colum in and the new colum housing was plastic and not metal like the original, so I assume It couldnt ground itself. May work for you too.

The turn signal control is only a switch and it passes current/volts (like the ignition) only. Grounding the turn sig housing is only for the indicator bulb in the housing (if supplied) and is not related to the operation of the other lights.

pgte3 if you still need help, I will gladly walk you through the trouble-shooting and repair problems.

I will take you up on that offer WC. As you can read from my other post, all lights work ,just will not flash. I have tried several flashers (thermal and electronic), still no flashing. This leads me think bad wiring around the flasher or signal switch on steering wheel, or a bad switch on steering wheel. I have taking apart the signal switch on the steering wheel, and are trying to figure out the best way to use a meter to solve this.
