Help identify this T18

I found this T18/D20 combo in NJ for $500. I'll be putting it in my '75 CJ with the 360. These two pics are all that I have right now. Its 5 hrs away and I don't want to make the trip unless I can confirm which T18 it is.

What else should I ask him for?? Input shaft length and tooth count, bellhousing type and what it came out of???

Ok, it's a T-18 and Dana 20. The TC shifter is CJ, roughly 1974 or later. Hard to tell much more, except that I believe it is not from an intermediate Jeep, since it seems not to have a plate adapter between the bell and the transmission. So this could be a Ford transmission that has been adapted to the D20, or it could be a Jeep CJ transmission with either a 4.02:1 1st (1976) or a 6.32:1 1st ('77-79). The transfer case has a tag - if the transmission has a tag, we could identify it by the part number, 535xxxx. An intermediate transmission will be 999636.

Look at the PTO port location to ID a Ford T-18; all Fords are 6.32:1 1st gear.

 

Also, the trans-TC adapter looks factory Jeepish... so I would guess it's not a Ford T-18.

The bell is kind of odd looking ... but somebody here may be able to look at it and ID it (Nick?). You need to make sure it was not mated to an oddball engine like the early 232 (from a J-truck). The TC and shifter is clearly CJ though ...

 

If you can post a pic of the bellhousing where it mates to the transmission I could pin it down closer. Based on the pics shown it's either a Ford T-18 using the T-150/176 bellhousing or a '76-'79 CJ T-18. Does it have a long skinny pilot on the input shaft for the pilot bushing to ride on or a short stubby one? A pic of the pilot on the input would be helpful as well.
Bellhousing looks AMC to me. The shifter top indicates a later model T-18 with reverse back towards the rear instead of the earlier models with reverse towards the dash.

If either one of the ones I mentioned is correct it will bolt to an AMC V-8 or I-6 no problem as long as it's not the earlier 232 bellhousing pattern Timgr mentioned.

I spoke to the guy and he said it cam out of a CJ7. Lucky me!!!

That looks like the long pilot I was talking about. Should have come from a '76-'79 CJ-7. Be aware that in '76 there were 4.02-1 versions used and in late '76 or early '77 they went to the 6.32-1 version so I'd make sure which it is.

 

I expect the only way to identify the 1976 transmission is by the tag number, by pulling the top off and counting the input gear teeth, or by counting the number of input turns to one output turn.

If you post the tag number - 535xxxx - I can tell you what the ratios are.

Hey Tim, no tag on the tranny. Casting number on drivers side above the pto plate says, 13-01-065-908 with Borg-Warner directly below it.

Here are the pics I took for ID purposes.

 

As Tim mentioned the tranny-t-case adapter looks Jeep. The tranny top cover looks to be CJ 79. Check to see if reverse is over and up (76 1/2-78 ), or over and down (79 and Ford).

 

If it's a 6.32, then it would be a T-18A, used by Ford.

 

Uh, '77- '79 CJ's used the 6.32-1 version. That's what he has by the pics shown. Waggy's and Pickups also used the 6.32-1 version.
