Right now my plan is to get it 100% mechanically, which is pretty much accomplished other than the gas gauge, and enjoy driving it. The windshield wipers, running lights, turn signals, and all that stuff work and looks to all be original without bubba wiring jobs. The taillight housings were rusted pretty bad so the $13 Omix replacements were an easy solution. The top is in great shape and I can see purchasing three new seats at some point to round things out.

I paid $2500 for it so I'm not looking to spend a whole lot on it (famous last words). That's why I just spray painted the wheels instead of spending $1200 on new wheels and tires. Knowing me I'll buy tires before too long because I'm guessing those bias ply TSLs ride like bulldozer.

The frame is rock solid, and the body has rust all in the normal places. This is one of those deals where once you start fixing body rust you never stop because it's a bunch of little places all over at body seams and whatnot, but nothing major or structural. I love the original green color and the faded look should look pretty cool with the shiny white wheels.

    Great looking CJ.

throwback: Good looking Jeep. While the Omix tailights are probably fine, avoid Omix for real parts as much as possible. There are a lot of other venders that have better quaity parts. Just my .02

BJHitson60: Very nice Renegade. Did you wait until you were 60 to hit your son, or did you have to hit him 60 times? ;)

Throwback I think you got a very good deal for the money.

BjHitson you have a beautiful Renegade.

Throwback, Posimoto and Walt - Thanks for your kind words on the Renegade. I am having a lot of fun getting the Jeep back in running order. On my out of Onion Springs OHV last weekend the road was blocked overnight by a large tree that fell. Therefore, I had a good reason to take it "off road" so to speak...

FYI - I was born in 1960 and my first Jeep was a 1960 CJ-5... thus the name - I never hit my son.

Finally got the 66 completely cleaned up and on the road. New tires are next on the list. Right now I'm thinking BFG A/Ts as it's going to spend more time on the road than the mud going forward.

Mud is fun. I can't stay out of it. My daughter always says " Daddy I wanna watch the mud go by".

Yeah, I'll probably end up running some trails with a buddy before too long so I figured I'd keep an MT. I went cheap and got the Cooper Mud Claw Radial MTs (145 ea installed). It rides like a Cadillac now in comparison. Hearing the engine in third gear is a new sensation, along with being able to drive over 45mph without feeling like the whole contraption is going to explode. Money well spent I believe.

They look good. Remove the blue from the lettering sooner than later, I've seen it stain if left on too long.

Round two of cleaning - stiff brush and a bunch of Greased Lightning degreaser. The shocks and stabilizer are actually blue!

Took the soft top off yesterday, just in time for a cold snap. I like it way better because I can't hear all the little squeaks, rattles, and whatnots.

Need to take new pics. Some of these are almost a year old, and I have refined quite a few things.

It's an Isuzu 4FB1 sourced from a Chevette.

Before anyone gets excited and tries this swap, these are pretty rare, and the bellhousing required to bolt it to a T5 transmission is pretty rare. Many service parts(like cam bearings) are NLA. It's GREAT engine, known for long life(IF you replace the timing belt religiously) but GM decided to take off the turbo when they imported it in the I-Mark and for the Chevette so Americans could have power brakes. Which nearly halved the power to a whopping < 60hp.

With it N/A I barely can ever grab 4th gear(downhill only), and am going nowhere near a highway(50mph+) in a barn door with 31's. I MAY have seen 45 mph a few times, downhill. The up side, I am probably getting 30+ mpg in a barn door with 31's.

Does AMAZING off road though. Trundles through and over anything barely off idle in 2WD high.
Working on a T304 1 5/8" mandrel bend turbo manifold and overhauling a Garrett TB2536 turbo. Also sourced a C223T IP, converting to a VW style manual CSD.

I grew up as a diesel mechanic... Isuzu makes some great engines. And yes a turbo will make a world of difference:) I considered a lot of different diesel options when planning my current repower project. The Isuzu 4BD1T was at the top of my list... along with the 1.6L VW diesel, a Perkins 192, Mercedes OM616, International HS2800 and the 300 TDI. As much as I wanted a diesel in my little CJ5, in the end I decided it was cost prohibitive.

A turbo should almost double the power output of your little 4FB1... The 4BD1T puts out 128 horse. So I would expect you would be somewhere in that ballpark.

I've seen some guys build an adapter to mate the factory exhaust manifold to a small turbo... May be easier than fabbing a whole new manifold
