CJ6 Perkins VIN help, what year???

    Hello kind folks;

I have exhausted my search for information about what year my diesel Perkins CJ6 could be. I have ruled out 1961.

    My sense is that it's a 62', 63' or 64.

Can anyone help me out? I'm stuck!

They made 29 of 'em in '61, numbers 10001-10029. The '62 records begin at 10029 and then kinda stopped there. Figure it's probalby a '63. That'd be my gut guess.

I came up with the same thing.

I'm in agreement that it's a 62 or 63 but leaning towards 63 based on the number made in 61.

OK, a couple years late on this. My CJ5 SN is L8305 S 241668. Paint and trim code: 385 246. High mounted dual electric wipers, no reflectors, 225/T86AA. Titled as a 69 but would appear to be a 67-as in the REALLY lost years. Still has stock blue paint and trim.

    Hi there from Australia.

Mine is a CJ5, assembled in the Willys plant in Brisbane, Australia, which operated through the 60s into the early 70s. It is one that was fitted with teh Australian made Ford Falcon 6 cylinder engine and gearbox, so that doesn't tally with US engine numbers.

The Willys Toledo plate has the serial number 8305 193110. I'm a bit confused from the pdf information - one way a read it indicates a 1959 US build, another way is a 1965 US build. What year does that number indicate? It has the petrol tank under the seat. The windscreen is flat with the wiper mounts on the bottom, but I'm not sure it is original - the tailgate, wheels, blinkers, taillights at least I know are not original.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Have I got this right?

    Hi again,

Posting again as I didn't make clear what I am unsure about. The number on the plate (Willys Toldeo) is 8305 193110. From the pdf I see that 83 is Universal CJ-5 and 05 is Open Body. So far so good.

Now I'm not sure how to read the 193110. One way is to take that is the straight serial number as 193119 which indicates a Toldeo build of June 1965.

However, the pdf (page 3) says "the remaining five (5) digits on earlier models, or six (6) digits on post 1972 models, indicate the Sequential serial Number." And in the later table titled "Model Number Information" for the Universal 1962 thru 1971 has model number 8305 beginning with Serial number 8305-217502, which is higher than my number. This would indicate a build prior to 1962. So, looking at the information for Vehicle identification Number for 1971 and Prior, the 8305 is ok for 10 digit numbers, then there is the fifth digit which doesn't match. The next digit in the VIN is 1, which indicates Left Hand Drive, leaving the five digits required the pdf says fit 10 digit VINS (6 digits for 11 and 13 digit VINS).

What am I reading wrong here? This CJ5 was assembled in Brisbane, Australia in the 1960s, for which there are hopeless records, so I am hoping to get a fix on the date of the US build and work from there.

    Any help appreciated.

The VIN numbering in Australia could be totally different than the US. From what i can tell, 10 digit vin with serial #93110 would place it as 1959 here in the US but I don't think the VIN would start with 8305 in 1959. The 5th digit being 1 doesn't fit with the data I have. Not sure how much of this applies to another country.

Thanks Mark for the quick reply.

The Cj5 has two ID plates, the Willys Toldeo plate with 8305 193110 and a Willys Australia plate, which is blue (apparently the blue plate tells us Aussies that it is one imported by Willys Australia, and converted to Right Hand Drive here, not a private import). The Willys Australia plate has the serial number 1595, but apparently many of the records were lost in a fire and in any case the Jeeps were slow sellers here back in the 60s, and serial numbers were not necessarily sequential and the vehicles put together with parts that were to hand. Dating the Australian assembled Jeeps is apparently a bit of a dark art.

So I had made an assumption that the US (Toledo) VIN showed the US production date before the vehicle was shipped to Australia and converted. But I hadn't thought of your suggestion that maybe the US VIN was different to the US market Jeeps. Hmm.

If I can find out any more from the Australian forum (the early jeep forum at www.ausjeepoffroad.com) then I will get back to you. It will be another piece in the jigsaw!

    Thanks again,
    Gordon

I just bought a cj5 that is titled 1971 but the serial number is 8305 017 350128. The 225 manufacture date is 1968, so is the jeep a 69 model ?

    Serial Numbers

This topic has probably been talked over way to much but here is another query into it.
I have a serial number off of my CJ-5. I have figured out that it is a '69 CJ-5 but I can't figure out the rest of the serial number. It also said that it was made in Cananda. It's better if I just show you the pictures of the plates.
