Electric Power Steering?

    Now that electric power steering pumps are becoming more common place, anyone explore the possiblity of it?
    Especially if you want to keep the Lhead, the electric pump will allow the motor to keep as much of its HP as it can.

    Electric PS does not have a pump.. At least not the ones I have seen..

    Most of the modern electric steering is a pump run from electric motor and is costly. The new Challengers use it. There is no free ride, the mechanical pump only uses HP when the vehicle is turning. Otherwise it uses maybe 1/2 hp . Stay simple go with what is already tried and true.

    I thought the power pump took alot more from the motor.

    I have an electric (or more correctly, electro-hydraulic) power steering unit on the '89 Subaru XT6 engine I swapped into my VW Vanagon. It was a pain in the a** to integrate into the van. I had to modify the steering column by adding the sensor and chopper wheel, and used the Subaru computer to run/manage the system. Fortunately, this was a pre-canbus system that was adaptable to operate stand-alone. If I did it again, I would just run a conventional belt run hydraulic pump on the engine.
    My '03 Mini Cooper has an electric steering system that has been replaced a couple times under extended warranty, I think as a requirement of the Nat'l Highway Safety Administration. These systems don't instill confidence with me, at least so far.
