sounds like it isn't a well liked idea. maybe needs time for the masses to accept?

Considering it's fairly standard equipment on a whole slew of newer cars (Including the F-Series pickups), and I'm not hearing of massive failures, I'd say it's probably got most of the bugs worked out.

Are you talking an electric assist steering setup or an electric powered pump hydraulic system?

There's a pic of a CJ5 with an electric assist on here someplace, but it wasn't what the tread was about so it will be hard to find.

I've looked at this & it seems neat easy & cheap but the downside to it that I see is if you still run a ross box then you still have all the normal wear/slop points that will wear /get sloppy faster because of the extra strain on the system. If you have a saggy conversion then you might as well just run a power saggy.

Electric powered assist I guess. Not sure of proper nomenclature. From what I've seen its still a hydraulic steering box, the electric motor takes place of the hydraulic pump? Mustangs have had conversion kits forever. Just wondering why they aren't popular in jeeps. Electrical goes out and its back to manual steering. It won't lock up or anything

OK, electric powered assist would be a steering column with an electric motor bolted to it to provide the help, this is a cheap upgrade used by weekend warriors racing older cars/rods. Junkyard Saturns seem to be a popular source for these.

Then theres electrically powered hydraulic pumps used to replace the engine driven pump on some cars, this sounds like what you're looking for.

So why don't more jeepers use it? Seems nice. It's a proven system

Dont know how it would work with retrofitting but new cars use computers to do the assisting. Steering column sensor so it knows how fast your turning. Wheel speed sensors so it knows how fast=is it in need of low assist or high assist. Power cables to the electric motor are battery cable size. Usually the electric pump is mounted on or right next to the steering rack

Well as a Willys CJ2A owner with a 80" wheel base power steering on the road can be a little scarry. Most boxes are like 4 turns stop to stop that's pretty damn quick. I have a Manual Saginaw 525 box its like 6.25 turns stop to stop. More work off road but so much safer on road. Rather hit a tree then on coming traffic when I reach for the radio.

If it is anything like the electric power steering in my car it is because you want to feel something through the wheel. I don't want to talk about the number of times I have slipped off the side of the road because I could not feel the edge of the road through the wheel when I have an oncoming car on a narrow road.

Just to be clear the EPAS system doesn't replace your steering box, it adds torque to the steering column between the wheel & the box.

Actually for EPAS there's a cheater box to replace the speed sensor input, comes with a knob that lets you adjust the assistance from "none" to "1960s Full Sized Chrysler Numb" :)

If the wiring and electronics are anything like my older F-350, I'd say failures are only a matter of time.

How many bazzillion safety recalls were made on "newer cars" in 2015?

Meh, it's not like there were never recalls on hydraulic power steering systems. And they've been in use quite a bit longer. Not saying that there's zero chance of failure, but outside of willful negligence, they just aren't going to mass produce something that's inherently dangerous.

Even the Corvair and Pinto, all of the press about how "dangerous" they were (and yes, I'm aware people died, I'm not trying to absolve any manufacturer of malfeasance), the actual danger of them was considerably less than people think it was.

FWIW the pic I saw of one on here had the assist unit behind the dash.

I absolutely hate the electronic steering in my wife's 2012 car. It won't drive straight! It is always wanting to go a little to the right or a little to the left. I am constantly correcting. Forget driving with one hand. I took it to the dealership twice when the car was brand new and they said that is just the way they are, there was nothing they could do about it. I don't like the feel of front wheel dive vehicles anyway, but now this? There are fewer and fewer cars out there now that are rear wheel drive. :(

There is a reset procedure for most of them. Especially after an allignment. Just tells the computer where the new zero position is on the wheel.

When I converted from the Ross bellcrank monkey motion setup, I went to a manual Saginaw box so I wouldn't even have a belt, pump or hoses to worry about. Whew, not there's electric! Next thing you know, new jeeps will have power brakes and auto transmissions!!! Wait a darn minute!! They do!!!! What is this world coming to? lol
