TBI Thoughts

    You can easily put together a system for around $600. My big problem is the high pressure in the lines. The early systems ran around 15psi and that is a good deal.

    Yall keep in mind you can have the a factory GM computer reprogrammed cheap enough, that is the key to getting it done for around $600

    Also, consider that to convert a GM 4.3 FI engine to a carb cost you easily $550. That is the way I am going but that is not the only way to do it. Fuel Injection is cool for a lot of reasons.

    Either way you are out about $1500-1700 to convert to a GM 4.3 with either option. That is just for the guys wanted to convert not just directly related to the current discussion of just fuel injected. Just thought some one might find it useful

    Have to recall that....finally i wont recommend anymore the holley blue pump, it work right the a tbi 87-95 with a 12-15 psi but the newer pump have now a steel bushing instead of the brass one the used to put in. Been trought two pump in one year.

    I've been runnig an E8094 from napa since 4 month without any issus.

    Parting in a junkyard with lower the project price.

    i had a chance to get a complete kit made by AFI for 250$, had to buy the temp sensor and it work fine.

    I love the injection on my jeep we have cold winter so it worth every penny (even if i would have paid 1000$).

    I realize this is an old thread, but something to consider for adapter material is Micarta, not the counter top stuff, the Micarta I am referring to is used by electric motor/generator repair/rewind shops. It is an excellent insulator, electrical and heat, can be shaped with common hand tools found in any garage, easily machined with a Dremel, hack saw, file, and tapped with regular taps. It is available in various thicknesses. Good luck!

    I made my adapter out of 1/2 plate steel, with a hole saw ,a grinder, and a die grinder. Works fine.

    The Willys with gm efi just started 1st try in 11 degree weather. I'm a happy camper. Then I went back inside.

    Started mine (tbi) on a minus 35 last winter, took two try but started running with any assistance of me on the gaz pedal.

    I would like to make an update for everyone thinking about going the Megasquirt route. I ran MS1 for 12 years and it worked quite well, but there were a few issues I had that I was unable to work out. My advice would be to start with MS2. Several reasons......one is that the rpm resolution on MS2 is much finer (1 for MS2 vs 100 for MS1). This makes using the tuning program work much better (MegaLogViewer as well as TunerStudio). You have more adjustability in parameters you set to make the engine run right. (In a Jeep you might see changes in elevation from sea level to 10k feet). MS2 has a fuel equation that is called %baro which takes into account changes in barometric pressure so it automatically adjusts your fuel based on altitude. I would also suggest getting the mapdaddy from diyautotune it fits right on the V3 board and takes the place of the single map sensor. This allows the ecu to get real time reading on altitude changes. (On MS1 you would have to stop as you were going up in altitude turn the engine off, then restart the engine to allow the ECU to factor in the change in pressure). Another reason to start with MS2 is you can run the IAC stepper motor directly and doesnt require additional modifications to your throttle body (MS1 you can run a different valve, but then you have to figure out a way to adapt the valve to your current set up. I was going to have McRuff machine an adapter for me but after more research and cost effectiveness I chose to move to MS2. The MS2 daughter card plugs in place of the MS1 chip and costs $136. The map daddy with two barometric sensors on it cost $74. The main forum for megasquirt that I would use is MS Extra and for Megasquirt related parts I would use Diyautotune. Hope this helps someone now or in the future considering Megasquirt.

    This is next on my list. Just so I understand what parts are needed I am making the below list to be edited by those that have done this swap.
    1. late 80's early 90's tbi unit with wiring harness from donor vehicle
    2. Wide band GM o2 sensor/ with bung welded into exhaust
    3. Walbro pump
    4. Return line back to tank
    5. Coolant temp sensor GM?

    I'm Looking at the MS230-K Megasquirt kit with map daddy.

    What else do I need?

    If / when you do this can you note where an oddfire, even fire, or 4.3 would make a difference. It's easy to get so overwhelmed that running a carb even in bad shape seems like a good option.
