Need Jerry can lock ideas

I'm at a stand still on my swing out tire carrier build extravaganza because my brain stopped working when trying to figure out how to secure and lock my gas cans. I've been thinking of a one inch steel strap anchored on each side of the gas can carrier with a lock at the top, but I think the design will make it difficult to remove the cans.

I'd just as soon not buy a manufactured latch. Any ideas?

Thanks for the links. The GOBI "Jerry Can Tie Down System" is a little pricey and doesn't lock but interesting otherwise.

But you hit a home run with the hinge. THAT'S what I wasn't thinking of. The holidays have maybe been too long... Back to work in the morning.

Just something else to consider - we used to put a - top on the can to hold it down that went over the handles and covered the fill hole. That's after severl folks got the gas siphoned out of the can on them while they were parked.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to stop before it starts. I want to secure both the cans and their contents with the same apparatus. Of course, I can't find a locking gas cap for the regular gas tank, so I guess I'll just hope for the best on that.

well it seems that after years of wheeling no one has yet to invent a locking cap for the jerry can?? Seems like someone should get to work and maket some money off of it!

These days there are so few of us using jerry cans that in order to make a profit from locking caps they'd have to sell for three or four times the amount the cans sell for. "You want a $200 locking cap with that can, sir?" R)

I just got 2 swiss mill can's in good shape for cheap, and it has the locking snap top on them. I'm on my way out for pictures right now.

Alright, as you can see it's a flexible band, I believe out of aluminum, and will work if you're going with the original style holder. Has a hook on the front and back, a snap lever with extra ears for a small lock or cable lock. The can has a snap top, with a hole for a small cable lock to go through and into the handle. Of course, this will only keep honest people honest. If they want it bad enough they'll figure a way to get the gas or cans.
Here's the PB link with all the pictures in it.

Thanks, Sammy. I used this type of strap on my '53 Jeep station wagon 25 years ago. I think those were a type of spring steel. I'll add that configuration to my ruminations for something different this time around. I made my own can holders, btw. I have to do something with all that scrap metal laying around. :)

I don't have many pictures of my swing out tire/jerry can/chainsaw carrier. But what I did was weld on three rods. One in the center between the 2 jerry cans and one on each side.I welded washers to the ones on the sides and layed my Hi-Lift jack across the top of the cans and the center rod has a hole for my padlock.I then wrap a cable lock through the can handles around the jack and through the handle of the Husky saw when I carry it.I'll try to attach a picture although it doesn't really show the cans and hold downs. If you look close you can see the Hi-Lift across the top of the cans.I copied that part from I guy that used to be in the club...I might have pictures of his somewhere. Thanks for the suggestion, Kman. That outfit seems like it would rattle a bit. Do you (or your friend) run nuts on the two outside pins?

    The cans, SG Company.
The carrier/band, well, dad picked it up back in the golden days when men were men and didn't use lift kits, the days of $30 Hi-Lifts and pure knobby rubber.
Actually it had a K-Mart price tag on it, haha. But they are OLD.

Thanks. For that price, plus shipping, I may just end up making something. "Jerry rig it", so to speak.;)
