4.0L in a flatty?

Just playing in my mind. What would it take to put a 4.0L in a flatty? Extend the hood area/frame ~ 10"? Like I said, just running it through my mind. Had a friend offer me a good 4.0 for cheap.

I don't think it will fit, even if you hacked the heck out of the firewall. (That's why AMC extended the front clip on the intermediate CJ's)

A Buick 225/231 or Chevy 4.3 V-6 makes for a much cleaner (and cheaper) swap, especialyy when you start to look at little things like driveline components. ;)

I have seen a Chevy 250 cid inline 6 in a flatty, so I'd expect it could be done. Not without significant firewall mods. However, a modern inline 4 or V6 will be a much, much easier swap.

There are some transmission compatibility reasons why you might want to use a) a Studebaker inline 6, or b) a Ford 144/170 inline 6, but they aren't compelling today IMO. No easy way to adapt an AMC inline 6 though.

I know it would be difficult, and really had no intention of doing it. I was just playing with the idea and wondered what ideas everyone else could come up with. IMHO the I-6 is the single best motor Jeep ever used and it would be nice to "fit" one into my favorite Jeep model.

The AMC 150 is derived from the AMC inline 6s, and the '91-on engines have the same or similar MPI as the 4.0L - basically 2/3 of a 4.0L HO. It too is a very good engine, from what I've heard. That would be a much better swap to a flatty IMO.

Here's a pic of the 1966 Rambler Classic 770 I owned for a few years. I always thought it was a classy, sharp looking car -- and had many comments to that effect. Usually people my age (39) and younger had no idea it was a Rambler and thought it was anything from an old Fairlane to a Impala.

This car had the 232 I6, and if I wasn't into Jeeps would have looked into a 4.0L swap as a repower.

That's a nice clean looking Classic. Rambler had some nice, and fast, cars. I was just giving you a hard time. I even owned one or 2 and always wanted a AMX.

A pre-71 232 is not the AMC bell pattern, so the 4.0L would not have bolted up. You could use the case from a Jeep TH400, TF999 or TF727 and made a 2WD transmission that would work - a Jeep AW4 could maybe be converted to 2WD; IIRC Toyota used them.

Assuming it's an automatic... just a comment.

I used to have a Comanche pickup with the 4 banger, if that's the one your talking about. That thing had plenty of power.
