When you do the starting fluid spray test make sure its up to temp 1st. If the intake is warped a little it'll show up then.
You can also use carb cleaner if you have that.

I run the BOSCH-SUPER's (pn 7516). Don't know if they are any good or not, but they were available and seem to work. I also have a good set of plug wires (on my JEEP) that you can use to troubleshoot.

Jim - I know you're just itchin' to get your hands into it (help as you say). Just showing my confidence in your abilities. Besides, Sparky sounds like he's ready to blow a fuse. The offer of the VW mechanic was just icing on the cake. Smilely faces all around if I knew how to include them.

    Sparky,

I'm voting electrical. Have you had the alternator checked for it's output under full load? If you are running HEI and not getting enough constant voltage to your dizzy, then it is going to not send out a consistant spark. Do you have stock pulleys? How new is your belt? The problem lies in the electrical, me thinks

    cheers

    oh yeah, disconnect the tach....:)

Disconnected the tach, had no effect.

I'll put new plugs in tomorrow. I thought about the alternator too.

I tried lugging it up hills in 3rd gear, nice steep ones going about 20 mph, didn't miss a beat.

Watched the tach tonite on the way home, it never bounced, just drifted down as the Jeep started slowing.

Re: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

    Maybe this'll help more.

It won't cut out at speeds below 60+ MPH now UNTIL I've gone over that limit, whatever the speed may be. Then once I back down to 45 or so I can once again accelerate to 55 MPH or so. But if I go over 60 it'll start up again and I'll have to slow down again. Definitely backfiring through the carb.

    Yeah, it would explain alot.

I swear, I tried MOP's old carb. It ran worse at idle than mine does but exhibited the same symptoms on my Jeep, which it didn't do on his. :?

Is it a backfire?, or more like a huffing/popping. When a engine runs lean under load it can "lean sneeze", not a true backfire where combustion takes place in the intake. A lean condition can be caused in the power valve circuit (when under load), or a main jet obstruction. Of course a vacuum leak would do it too.

Yes, I guess it's more huffing/popping as you described it.
