Lots of Commandos had Turbo 400s. Also Buick cars prior to '66 came with 225 and the Super Turbine 300 auto trans.

The valve covers look like oddfire. In '75 the bottom of the cylinder head changed to a less squared off corner on the oddfire where the
valve cover attached. Requires a particular valve cover or Offenhauser to work.
The crankshaft picture will tell for sure.

The cylinder head will tell if it is a pre-'75 which would be oddfire unless the heads were changed. A picture of the head with
the cover removed would help or pull the oil pan. From what I can see of the picture...it looks like the rods are on the same journal.

I’m going to dump 5qrts of brand new oil and pull the oil pan.

Just save the oil and reuse it. No reason to chuck it if its new.

You physically can't put an even fire or odd fire 231 cam in a dauntless due to the difference in cam bearings.

There are some other physical differences such as separate gear and something with the pump cam maybe.

It is definitely an odd-fire engine. Now the work to get it running begins.

It looks like you have a Buick sourced distributor from 1964-1965. It takes a Standard DR439 cap.
This is the cap shown in the picture with the window in the side and not on the terminal like the later
distributors which used a DR442 or DR442T. The caps match up with notch in the distributor. All this
takes it back to getting the correct sequence of the #1 in the firing order.
More information on caps from your recent post.

Didn't you have it pertronix converted when it was on the 5 hitter?

    I did.
I started it again today with that same ‘66 distributer I had on the shelf. Same issue - Firing on passenger side, Cold on driver side. Thought I’d try 180* out and got the classic backfiring right away.

    I’m still stumped.

What he said. And add a picture of the the inside of the distributor. I had a bad timing light that through me off time in a big way.

It is possible to mark the harmonic balancer to each cylinder. It'll be a process but with the pan off bring each cylinder to TDC and use a paint stick on the balancer at the timing mark. Sharpie the cylinder number on the line with a fine 0. Wash rinse repeat. Then check your cam to the crank and your distributor to the cam.

Number one has to coincide with the right cam lobe on the distributor shaft for the correct sequence of firing. This is accomplished by
re-stabbing the distributor, turning the distributor or moving the plug wires.
