Doing a crossover 2 into 1. Copying Norcal69’s build… more or less. Why reinvent the wheel.

I managed to get the headers sealed up and reinstalled. Cleaned up some wiring. Put heat covers over fuel lines after rerouting them. Put fender back on and buttoned everything up except building the exhaust.
I went and talked to one of the the local muffler shops. He will build my exhaust for $500. I wanted to do it myself but I’m having a hard time getting around with my knee. I know it will get done faster by having it done but I don’t know if it be exactly how I want it. I’m torn on what to do.

Talk to him. Tell him you want to be there when work is being done to address any issues that may come up. You are paying for the work so should not be a problem.

How many pain pills will $500 buy, combined with recovery time, is it worth it overall? Ron

As Kyle said, he polished his floor with the trips he made going under his Jeep! You have to ask yourself if it is worth the pain to say you did it yourself. $500 sounds like a very good
price and you will be able to do something else with your time. It will be done and you can move on to something else. Totally worth it IMO.

Looking at cost of materials is going to be right around $375-$400 I would defiantly be money ahead by having it done, plus he can do it in a day, and it would take me all week.

Been busy this week with checking stuff off my ToDo list:

-After fixing the carb float bowl leak by adding a fuel pressure regulator, I realized I needed to change out the smelly oil. So I did a seafoam treatment and then added Engine Restore after the change.

-I added a new Coil, Solid state Ignitor, and spark plug cables from Pertronix

-Pulled out the rattling heater fan and made a gasket in order to keep the fan from hitting the body of the heater box. The motor noise is still there but atleast it doesnt rattle now! Big improvement.

-The tail pipe was pointed straight at the spare and was coating the tire and rear corner with soot so I added an angled bolt on tip.

-finally found a matching glove box latch on ebay and installed the glove box door

-And finally, I made a mesh insert for my heater tube to keep the critters out :D

Talked to the owner of the muffler shop again today and asked a few more questions. He said he had no issues with me in the shop giving direction on how i want the build, as long as its doable. He recommended 2.25" exhaust all the way out. I made an appointment to take it in on Tuesday.
Also showed him pics of Kyle's build and he said that wouldn't be a problem.

Since I don't have the complete rear cross member, I made some outer body mounts.

    Good looking welds. Stick?

No, it is a mig. I am still learning and practicing a lot so some look better then others. I went a little hotter with a slower wire speed, then the chart showed and worked well for me. The vertical welds are not as nice, but I didn't have as steady of a rest.

Got a day above freezing to pull the cylinder head on my "barn find" 1951 M-38. Still knee deep snow, but wanted to assess how much I'll need to do before I can drive it.

My concern was that there might be water/ice in #4 cylinder, since the engine would not make a full 360 rotation by hand. There was heavy water corrosion to the #4 sparkplug, below the hood hinge, and it was not tight in its well.

I feared finding internal corrosion that might require pulling the engine for a rebore.

Halleluyah! The cylinders and pistons are PERFECT! Not even any sign of any wear - none at all. (The 26,000 miles on the Odometer seems valid.). The jeep gods are smiling on this one.

The rotation was being blocked by a stuck exhaust valve, which had sat in the part-open position for 50 years. But I freed it up, and the valve and seat seem serviceable. Engine spins like silk now.

This gives me a much brighter outlook on my summer.... after the blizzard forecast for tonight.

Yes, it is very tired. Been great for our eastern wheeling of forest floors, mud etc. As soon as you unload a tire its over though.
