Reading through FinoCJ's Tera Low thread, TerraLow viable opiton? | EarlyCJ5.com
several members have posted that the AA roller bearing conversion has made their transfer cases (D18) much quieter. Well, I did this on mine awhile back, and my results have been mixed at best. It's pretty quiet under power, but it howls like a banshee under deceleration.
Is this normal? Did I screw something up? I've had the pan back off, and all appears well. I tried adjusting the bearing pre-load (almost impossible in the vehicle!) but it made no difference.

I PUTT THE AA KIT IN MY TRANSFER CASE LAST YEAR AND ITS BEEN GREAT! ITS QUIET ALL THE TIME. THE MAIN REASON I PUT IT IN WAS BECAUSE I COULD NOT GET A SHAFT TO LAST MORE THAN A FEW HUNDRED MILES AND I WAS BUYING THE "HARDENED" SHAFTS.

My transfer case, rebuilt by Herm, has his 1 1/4" hardened shaft in it. Howls under deceleration/ coasting. While cruising and accelerating it is not near as noticeable. I have about 2500 mi on the rebuild. I'm considering switching to to roller intermediate shaft.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Are you sure it isn't a different bearing/gear related issue?

It started acting like this when I did the conversion.

Don't tell me this, I just finished putting a Novak kit in my Dana 18 big hole yesterday. I plan to put it in when I go back to the cabin. The only reason I did it was because the one that is in there is making noise on deceleration, it is quiet when driving, just noisy when you let off at 50mph or so. I plan to open it up and look inside when I get time later in the summer, just to see what it looks like. The one I just went thru had only 27k miles on it, I found the intermediate shaft had ripples in it like the rollers were not rolling around the shaft, just laying in one spot and turning?

My AA conversion is quiet accel and decell. Of course after 30 years in construction my hearing isn't what it used to be. Hahaha. I'd suspect that something else is making your noise. I don't know if you did the Tera Low conversion too, but there can be interference between one of the shift rails and the low range gear with the Tera Lows. It made some horrible sounds until I ground off some of the shifter rod.

I'm wondering if running the intermediate gear with sloppy roller bearings caused the gear teeth to wear funny, causing them to howl now that they're in proper alignment. The problem with that theory is that there's no visible wear on the gear teeth...
