I just swapped the stock windshield on my M38A1 for one from one of my parts jeeps. The latter has taller glass, wipers on the bottom, and the motor is mounted on the outside lower driver's side. It dropped right onto the M38A1 hinges and provides better visibility - all good. Can anyone tell me the year/model this may have come from - I need to order a new frame seal, and control switch for the wipers. I can use any 3 position switch, but I need the correct seal.

    Thanks,

    g

If the glass is arched on top '68-'75 CJ. If flat on top late '67-'68 as far as I've been able to pin down the flat top glass with bottom mount wipers.

This is a common and desireable mod for folks not doing a correct restoration on an Early with top mounted wipers for reasons you found. I put them on both my '59 CJ-5 and the '59 CJ-6 project.

Arched on top, sorry - I forgot to include that in my original post. It really is a big improvement. Now I need to move the hood and windshield bumpers, doesn't look like the latch to hold the hood up is going to fit - not enough room on the top of the windshield frame.

    Thanks guys,

    g

Noahlon, Thanks for the picture. My windshield is the same on the bottom - the top has arched glass, and not enough room for the hood bumpers or hood latch.

Nickmil, do you have a picture of your windshields? I have tried to find one on the web but have been unable; I am trying to figure out were the hood/windshield bumpers go on this setup.

    Thanks,
    g

    Thanks Nickmil,

My CJ5 is an early 60s Australian assembled, but is hard to date - it has some bits which I know are not original and some that may be not original. One is the windshield, which is flat on top with the wipers on the bottom. I had been thinking os getting one with the top mounted wipers, because I think it is probably from that period, but are you saying the later ones are better? Can you tell me why some find the low wiper screens more desirable? Are they a straightforward exchange?

    Thanks for any advice,

    Hi Gordon,
The arched top glass. bottom mount wipers windshield allow for much better visibility as the glass is moved up in the frame, wipers with multiple speeds and park, controls that are easily reached, etc. It all comes down to the look you want and what's comfortable for you. There is nothing really right or wrong unless doing a period correct restoration.

    Thanks nickmil,

Maybe I'll stay with what I've got, which is flat top wipers low. I hadn't got to researching the wiper motors, and I think multiple speeds + park, + better visibility even if not arched top, would seem to make for a safer runabout. I definitely want to drive it; it will be pampered, but it won't be a trailer queen.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

The motors in early Jeeps with the top-mounted vacuum wipers were troublesome and ineffective, and sometimes they only have a motor on the drivers side, with a manual wiper on the passenger side. The aftermarket electric replacement motors for the vacuum motors are either junk (from the Jeep retailers) or expensive (for marine use). You can usually buy the complete windshield with the bottom mounted wipers and the linkage in the windshield frame for less than it would cost for two of the marine motors. And the bottom wipers work pretty well, as well as usually having the taller glass.

So the newer windshield makes sense economically, as well as being an upgrade.
