    My Jeep is a 75 CJ-5 with a 258, T-14/D20.

Another parts Jeep that was used was a 1972 with a 304. I kept the tranny/xfer case.

    What tranny/xfer case is it?

    Now I'm confused.

    #1 What tranny came STOCK in the 1975 CJ-5 with a 258?

    #2 Is this T15 a 4 speed?

'75 CJ came "standard" with a T14 3spd, but could be ordered with an optional close-ratio T18. (close ratio = 4:1 first as opposed to the highly desirable "wide-ratio" 6:1 first).

The T-15 3spd was the standard behind a 304. Not sure if the T18 was optional behind the 304 (Tim will know).

FWIW - the easiest way to tell a T18 at a glance is the shape of the shift cane. A T14 or T15 will have only one bend right near the base and is on the same plane the rest of the way. The T18 has two bends and comes up reall close to the dash, rather than back towards the driver.

So, should I put the t15 in my Jeep instead of the t14?

I'll tell you what, the 1st gear in my jeep is L_O_W!

The T-18 was an option behind the 304, at least it was in 79.

No T18 behind a V8 in a CJ from '72-76. Optional with the 258 (I think the 232 was excluded too, but I'm not certain of that). No T18 at all in a CJ-6.

The later CJs ('77-79) used the T18A, with the 6.32 1st gear. I've seen CJs from this era with V8s and T18As advertised, and wondered if they were stock or converted.

The T15 is stronger than the T14, but the gearing is about the same. Not a lot of advantage to changing the T14 to a T15.

The T18 would be obvious if you drove the car. The 3-speeds are an H pattern, straight forward for reverse. Reverse on a T18 of that era is way to the right and up.

Now I am beginning to wonder: Which tranny did my father use when he installed the rebuilt motor? He doesn't remember. (The frame-off resto on my Jeep started in 1984, and got placed in storage in 1986. I pulled it out and finished it in early 03.)

How can I tell the 2 trannys apart?

In California, an optional 304 with the T-18a transmission was offered from the factory.

My extra tranny does NOT have that funky stick. It's stick looks just like the t14.

Chances are, the tranny is an extra t14 gained by my father in some other trade while dealing with Jeep parts. The 304 was sold from the parts Jeep, and along with it, (Probably) the t15.

    Thank you, one and all!
