well I have most of parts needed for twin stick conversion . my question is . do you leave pill out in order to have 2WD low . my understanding is the pill will lock out low unless its in 4WD . doing conversion just for that cool factor :D:D

Yes, the interlock pill must be left out for 2 low.

Lift the pill in on mine when it was rebuilt. Just leave my hubs unlocked.

The point of leaving it out is so you can go slow on the trail in low range and shift in and of 4 wheel drive as needed without having to get out and lock/unlock the hubs all the time. I do that all the time on trail rides.

Ron, you are correct. The pill keeps the 'case from being shifted into low range 2wd. Thereby allowing low range to be used in 4wd only. Removing the pill allows you to utilize low range in 2wd.

Hey twin2, can you clarify for me what parts you needed, or I should say, what gearboxes you are working with for this conversion? I have a large hole d-18 that I'm planning on mating to a T-18, and it has a single stick shifter. I also have the twin stick small hole transfer case from my '57. Can I just swap the front sections to get 2 sticks or is it more involved than that?

jonnyc1999 . yes you can . you have everything you'll need from 57 transfer case . swap out shift rods . that's about it . and the discussion was to leave the interlock pill out for 2WD low . I also have large hole D18 . front is the only difference and the shift rods

OK thanks! I have the pill out on my shifter on the '57 and I would definitely recommend it. Supposedly as long as you don't go too heavy on the skinny pedal you shouldn't have any issues, and I really like the versatility of it

this is mock up of front output housing and jeep T18 . this is mostly directed to Nick. had to grind side of transmission at area that the twin stick housing touched to the point that the housing would not line up . also had to grind a little off the side of twin stick housing . the housing is still touching . not by much . got all the bolts in with no problem . is this something that is normal with this kind of swap . or do I need to grind a little more off one or other

I'd grind just enough off the transfer case housing so they don't touch. You will need to shorten the pivot shaft to match. This is pretty common. I suspect, don't know but suspect, this is why IH T-18 adapters clock the transfer case down more than Jeep adapters. The Scout 20's used on the T-18 had a similar style shifter mounting as the 18 transfer case and iirc are only about 1/2" thick on the transmission side.

thanks nick . I know this has been done a hundred times or more . interesting about the IH adapter . made some more progress after work today . dropped transfer case and gutted it , just to change the Hi /Low shifter rod . mostly back together . only work on it a few hours a day . 2 or 3 maybe . now if I am boring you guys just let me know and I won't add any more to this tread . but its something I wanted to do for a long time . just like the transmission swap a few years ago

It's all good, Ron. I learned something about the T18 swap which I wasn't aware of. Now I know I'll be grinding on the transfer case when the time comes.

Just another tidbit also. IH 20's had the shifter pivot pin lock bolt on the opposite "ear" of the front housing and the groove in the pivot pin is on the opposite end to match. I haven't found a replacement pin with the groove in the same location as the IH unit but that's not a big deal. If you need to grind too much off the ear then drill and tap the opposite ear for the lock bolt.
Hmmm. Maybe I should start machining some pivot pins for this purpose and market them to the Scout folks...

I have a T18 in my garage, hopefully going in the Jeep this winter. I wasn't aware of clearance issues with a dual shifter Tcase, but the fix doesn't look too difficult.
