only one way to find out. unbolt the shift tower and take a look. If your floorboard still unscrews and hasnt been modified you may not have to drop the tranny. could be your shift forks messed up

I can get it in first neutral and reverse. It seems very stiff but it does go into those.

When I first got my Jeep it would only shift into first and reverse. The problem was that it sat so long, crud and rust got into the 2nd and 3rd gear shift rail making it stuck. I took off the shifter tower and cleaned it real good and it worked fine. If yours has been sitting for a while, I would bet dollars to donuts you have the same problem. Easy fix.

Good info above. Before doing anything I'd (a) check the fluid level and condition and (b) change the fluid. Look at the old fluid and check for condition and possible debris. This can tell a lot. Milky chocolate indicates water, silver shiny particles indicate bearing or gear particles. Shiny yellow or gold indicates blocking ring wear.

Water...rain can run down the shifter lever and into the tranny ........rust....... the 2nd -3rd syncro hub get stiff from rust or uneven wear.Or the shift rail as mentioned above.Since first and reverse is ok ,clutch drag isn't an issue

You should be able to clamp the tower in a vise and shift it through all 4 slots to ensure the shift rails are free. Water and crud enters the shift rails through the rear port holes and they can seize.

Be careful with the tower in the vice. If the shifter is sticking and you pull tto hard you can break the cover, DAMHIK:oops:

You ought to be able to move the shift tower through all the gears whilst it is off. My guess is that the tower is not working properly and the transmission is OK.

This trans must have been sitting a while when I took the cover off and turned the motor over it's all rusty underneath. Another problem came up too. The clutch linkage tube is very sticky. I have to lift the pedal up with my foot.
