T-14 Parts Source

    Been looking on the net for hard parts for my T14. Looks like Herm has the best rebuild kit. But I also need a mainshaft and an input shaft. OMIX-ADA has the cheapest stuff, but I've heard some bad things about the quality of some of their products. Anybody have any feedback?

    Also, I can't find the shift forks. Anybody have a parts source for them?

    If you need this many expensive parts, you need to scrounge for another transmission to use or one to use for parts. The mainshaft will set you back over $125 for a new one, and the input shaft and the 2 shift forks will set you back at least $175.
    Here are the part #'s from 4wd hardware:

    The shift forks are not available from them. What is wrong with your shift forks? These parts don't usually wear out unless someone drives with there hand resting on the gearshift all the time.

    FWIW, I'm not a big fan of Omix parts, but I did put one of their input shafts in my T14 last year, and it's been fine, and looked good (whatever thats worth) when I got it.....

    McRuff- Not sure where you're shopping, but it's not where I am. I found the mainshaft and input for around $150 together, for the OMIX-ADA stuff.

    I don't drive with my hand on the shifter. The plastic(?) coating on the forks is wore through to the metal. Probably from years of dirty trans fluid floating around in there? Do you think I need to replace them, or just run them as is?

    I'm all for recycling some parts, but I've got one 34 year old transmission. Why would another 34-year old transmission be much better?

    Jon if you can get it that cheap go for it (not sure about quality), I personally have never seen a mainshaft cheaper than 4wd Hardware, they usually carry quality parts but they usually carry Crown instead of Omix ada.
    If the plastic is wore off the shift forks take it to a NAPA dealer and tell them you want something that will recoat them. I rebuilt my 34 year old T14 about 7 years ago and the forks were fine and so was the rest of the guts with the exception of the bearings. Most transmissions unless abused have 2 problems worn bearings and shift forks. Whats wrong with your mainshaft and imput shaft.

    Check with Herm, I was on the phone with him yesterday and he has guy that does nothing but rebuild manual transmissions from all over the world and he told me that he could get anything I needed. Worth a try from a great supplier.

    Main shaft - The nylock nut on the end (inside the T-case) decided it wanted to back off slowly. This allowed the threads on the end to get really boogered (which I could possibly fix) but also allowed the gear to slide around and wear the splines. You can see where the splines have become more narrow, and the gear has a little rotational play in it now.

    Input shaft - The inside surface where the mainshaft needle bearings ride is no longer smooth. You can feel the bumps with your finger. I guess you could call them ridges. They run lengthwise in along the bearing surface (parrallel with the needle bearings). Not sure how that happened.....

    Other than the occasional off-road abuse, I don't think that this transmission has been abused.

    I will HOPEFULLY one day replace the T14 with some other tranny (maybe a 420), but for now I need to get it back together and have it be somewhat reliable. That's why I am trying to replace any parts that seem questionable. I've been shopping for used parts, but used tranny parts (with no guarantee) scare me....

    Don't use Nylock nuts on any running part that can get hot one way or another. Don't forget to trim the front gasket for the bearing retainer to fit properly, I have never seen one fit right including the factory ones, this is usually what causes the front main bearing to wear out, lack of oil circulating around this bearing cause the gasket blocks most of the circulating hole. Use a gasket sealer of some kind on this same front gasket.
