    Hey all,

The CJ-5 spotters guide on this site mentions a snorkel cut-out on the passenger side of the hood on the early CJ5's. Mine does not have this - does anyone know if this was an option, or only on certain years? Any help as always appreciated.

My 1956 CJ5 has this snorkel cut out. My 1964 also had it. I believe I have read this was caused by the need to use up the supply of military M38A1 jeep hoods. Also on the these early CJ5 you will notice just in front of the windshield the non functioning covering of a rectangle cover. This was the battery box cover of the military jeep. This was part of the tub assembly.

There is a good write up of the history for conversion to the CJ 5 at this website.

Another bit of interesting info on the F134 motor is it was enginereed to be a positve internal pressure motor that would keep water out of it. So you could indeed run it under water, if it had snorkle for the air to come in, and another way for the exhaust to exit. Which was an extension for the exhaust pipe was available for the military jeeps.

I have never read the military drivers manual. Hope I to one of these days. I would like to see how it instructed the drivers to prepare and then drive the jeep in deep water. I had always wondered about the engine fan and what caused it to stay on if it got into the water. Probably had to take the fan belt off if crossing a river.

I should add the years to that line as you figured out, it's not all years.

the 3b site does lean to saying that all bodies had the box cutout... but both of mine (67 & 71) have been sanded down to bare metal and there is nothing in that area in the way of a patch. there is a patch on the floorboard on both of them to cover up the larger hole for the gas tank though...

Read that page. Pretty interesting. One thing I'm curious about - it says the CJ6 can hold 7?? Is this true?

Shoeman- The data in the article is not totaly true because it said the marker lights were not added till 72 and I think the gonverment mandated them in 69 or 70.

Reflectors on the hood in '69.

Lights in the fenders = '70.

Battery box ended around '64? Perhaps we can nail some of this down here for the tech section.

    Hi Saquash,
I have one of these hoods with the removable cut out still in it. The hood is good shape. Stripped of paint and not finished. Getting ready to put it up for sale.

    Sure.

    7 Billys.

    :D

They had some side-mounted seats for the back. You'd be knocking knees, and probably have to have the top off, but could probably get that many people in.

Heheh, ok. That makes sense. Kinda like the 3rd seat that's available for explorers like mine. Tremendously useful if you're planning on hauling a carload of oompa-loompas or munchkins!! :D

I've had 20-some in the M35... but then, that's BUILT for it. We hit 10 in my Explorer once, I have no desire to cram any more than that. Especially since we had to ride past the cop shop to get to the Subway where we were going! ;)

My buddy in HS had a '66 Chrysler Imperial Convertable. I think we had 24 people in it at the beach (local cruising spot) at one point. IIRC that thing was like 22' bumper to bumper.
