Well it is/was a running engine to begin with. R)

My neighbors first response was replace it when he saw it.

I'll probably get some time to work on it this weekend hopefully get the rear main seal out the rest of the way and put it back together.

I was planning to, just finally got around to taking pics and uploading.

Crank feels good, I can run my fingernail over it and don't feel anything.

Heres the main bearing that was in engine number 1 of 3 so far in Gold. It was honestly the exact same process you did, It had a leaky pan gasket/rear main, so when it was apart what did I do.....find more stuff wrong :(

along with these pieces of metal....still to this day I dont know where they came from in the engine???

I didn't find anything like that.

I suspect a chewed up distributor drive gear or two myself. Being brass I'm guessing it's long gone.

An old trick to getting the upper half of a rear main seal out is to push with a thin dowel rod while you rotate the crank. Sometimes it will spit the seal out when you rotate the crank, sometimes it doesn't.

Oh, yeah. I've done that, just not with a dowel rod... Usually can get away with a small screwdriver (carefully) and push it around enough to grab it and pull it out with pliers...

neither main bearing in the pictures look horribaly bad, they do show signs of wear, worst one i have looked at had the copper color showing, and was still running, just had low oil pressure, being you are that deep in the engine i would replace them along with the rod bearings jmho

Unfortunately "In this far" means nothing here in this case because it's not like it's just an easy operation "while I'm here". There's a lot more to do just to replace the bearings and I don't have the resources at my disposal to get it to the point where I can replace them now. You'll also see that my oil pressure is good in that thread. ;)

Trust me, I'd love to replace them.

Right now it's just not an option. :(

I'd like to do a complete overhaul now. Maybe next summer.
