So I haven't been able to do much progress on the jeep itself but my sister and I took the fenders off for access to the engine. Some the bolts broke but I'll just use a nut and boltafter drilling the old bolt out when I remount. For now...I"m going to get this thing streetable. I'm going to eventually take the wheels off of it and put the AT's on the white cherokee I have on these wheels, I'd rather have the street tires on the cherokee and the At's on the CJ. There's a guy here who has a Warn OD he'll sell and install for 450, but he's not sure about it working on my jeep so that's on hold temporarily. I've spent a week waiting for work here looking up projects and trying to figure out what I want to do.
I didn't read any of my previous posts but this is the list of what I'd like to do:
    4.3 swap
unsure about leaving the stock tranny in, depend on the availability of an OD
    saginaw steering
Holbrook long springs with either BDS or Rancho 9000's
32" mud tires maybe up to 34" later
Full cage installed with tie in to the front under the fenders
Probably box and repair the frame for peace of mind
Fuel cell where the rear seat is, I don't have interest in putting anyone back there anyway
    Lockers possibly

I want to use this for primarily weekend drives in the country and trail running here in east TN

I do have a few questions and anyone can offer up their opinion.
Dana 44. Shaft upgrades? I haven't researched this but it's on the list of things for me to look into.
Disc brakes? I'd like something a little more than the small drums to stop me

I spent some time lookin on the Novak site, this site, and Pirate for ideas and inspiration.
I'm going to build my own cage, using the home bender design drawing off ebay. Before anyone starts telling me not to, I have the ability and knowledge to do this and ultimately my safety is my main concern (along with my passenger). I'll later list some ideas when I get that far in the build.

For now my main goal is to get it running and trustworthy. I really want the OD installed, and that's one of the first things I need to do.
I also am not 100 decided on the 4.3 swap. I really like mustangs so a 5.0 would be another motor I'd be interested in. Still undecided.

    Opinions needed:
F head 134 with the OD...will that little motor with the overdrive be enough for 33's on the street? like keeping up with traffic if I want to take a weekend drive? Also with the 5.38 gears is that enough for the trail (and the street). I'm 40 min from Windrock and an hour from Jellico so those are the two I'll hit the most.
    Here's a few pics:

After the awesome response to the questions I posed...I got to talking to a local guy who's starting a fab business. he does good work and is a good guy, and he's getting my money.
As it's the super busy season and I can't even get home, let alone time home for working on any of my jeeps, or house work..
I'm just going to take the CJ to chatanooga for everything I need. I decided on a 4.3L chevy motor, wanted a little more pep. As much as I want a Ford motor, all the researching I've done points to funky problems with getting the Ford fuel injection to work, and there are some other headaches. The SM465 tranny and my T18 trans case.

"Blue" is getting the motor, trans, fuel cell and a new wiring harness put in. I hope a new steering column. I feel pretty lazy about this part...but I'm just going to get Tyler (the builder)to get the parts and assemble this thing. Also going on are a set of the Holbrook longleafs, rancho rs9000 shocks. I have a spare set of 32" mud kings that will be going on for now, but I have a feeling that new axles and maybe larger tires will be in the future. And I'm going with the Saginaw steering upgrade and power steering while it's under the knife.
As an added bonus, the jeep came with a brand new set of lowback Bestop buckets that will be put on.
I have yet to take measurements and look, but I'd like at least a 15 gallon cell for fuel purposes. And I'll put on a yellow top to provide power.
I'm really looking forward to driving that thing. It should have a nice mix of all I'd want from a jeep, with the possibility of MUCH more with time (and overtime to finance the next stage).

I'll be getting pics of the progress, because I work from now to turkey day with little to no time off.

sorry I missed your last post....an F-head and 33's wouldn't cut it for daily driving (on road) IMHO.....before I went the Ford 302 I considered the Chebby 4.3, I think that's a great choice that you'll be happy with

So the motor in one of my cherokees went out. The 67 project will be put on hold until next fall.
I'm looking around and seeing a lot of 90's era thunderbirds for CHEAP.
Thinking of researching the possibility of swapping the harness and 5.0 into the jeep. Anyone have experience with this? Trans swap availability?
For now the CJ is going to get cleaned up and running in the condition it's in, see what I like and don't like about it before anything more.

Not so much of an update. I got married since the last post and moved to FL...then NC for work so I have a house and my jeeps in the driveway. Took the XJ out to DPG this last weekend and had a blast. THinking about making the CJ a mostly trail rig and keeping the XJ dual duty. WHat's the biggest tire I can run on my stock axles? Is there an easy (and inexpensive) way to upgrade the rear? I'm thinking about swapping out for YJ springs and wheeling it with the AT's I have now and getting a feel for what this will do with the stock motor/trans/xfer case

Thanks for the input guys...I should be able to start wrenching on this soon.

Go with the Holbrook long leafs. YJ springs are awful soft, and there are a fewe varieties of them, long term use can lead to them flattening out pretty quickly. Plus they are pretty flat to begin with you may actually lose tire clearance.

Look for Waggy or wide track CJ7 axles for axle upgrades. D30 with disc brakes is a bonus for braking and steering radius improvements.

I found a WT axle with 3.31 gears. no knuckles or spindles...does have the drag link and tie rod though. Would this be a good fit/deal for my projected plans for 75 bucks???

Thanks again guys. I really appreciate the help. I'll get into working on this jeep and pics up as soon as I can
