While changing my valve cover gasket, I decided to write down my engine S/N this time. After researching my FSM, I came up with nothing that matches what it says the number should be laid out. Help me out if you can. S/N 4FR185061. I have checked and that's the number. It's the first digit that gets me. Got the number off the top of the block under the thermo housing. :hurrican:
    Oh yeah It's in a '56 CJ5, F4-134.

Willysnut: All my book states is "Prior to 1967 all F4-134 engine codes were marked 4J plus serial number" Jim (jpflat2a) is out of town for a couple weeks....he has the original books from that time frame. Check back then if no one else responds. Good Luck!! Glenn

seems that sounds familiar, but not sure.
One thing you might want to try also is the owners list. See if you can find a couple of others with similar number. Might give you an idea at least on what year the engine is close to if it's not original to your jeep.

I just ran across this thread and thought I'd add my engine number.
My '56 cj5 is serial # 29032 matches the frame # as well.
The engine is original I believe, and has serial # 4J111109.
