Guys, I have recently pulled the tranmission assembly from my 73 CJ5 (see builds section: "Slow build 73 CJ5") , to the best of my knowledge I have a three speed transmission, and a Model 20 transfer case. I have a few questions...
#1 Is is possible to replace the "cup" fitting that holds the throwout lever pivot ball? If so where can I find one. Mine is chipped on one side

#2 On transfer case above the front and rear shift rods there are two holes each threaded, both were plugged with a plastic insert, my Haynes shows 2 "poppet balls and poppet ball springs. Are these attainable? Needed?

#3 It is very dificult to shift the transfer case. There is a HUGE amount of play in the shift linkage, also grease fittings missing. Can the whole shift linkage assemble be purchased? Where?

#4 How difficult is the changing of the shift rod oil seals? Does the cap have to be removed?

#5 Final question.... Can and should transfer case be rust treated and painted?

Thanks for any and all help!!

I beleive it's cast into the housing. Maybe able to fix with with some jbweld? Otherwise just find a new bell housing.

The poppet balls/springs are actually on the other side of the shift rail from the opening. The covers just keep dirt and grime out of the rails. Mine was the same way. If you look at an exploded diagram it shows how they go back togeher.

Yes it can be repaired. But you may also want to look at a twinstick set up. It will allow you to control the front and rear axles independently.

I tore mine down for a complete rebuild when I replaced them. But I think the seals can be replaced by removing the shift linkages and pulling the seals off over the shaft.

You can if you want too. Best way would be to do a complete tear down, sand blast the case and components. Then clean, paint and rebuild.

Twin stick was one of the best things I did to my 73. As for the balls you can pull them out and have 2 low. However you do not have any detents to prevent front in low and rear in high. T case goes buy buy. I dont have the guts yet to remove the balls.

You do not remove the poppet balls. They are what lock the t-case into gear.

You are refering to the detent pills between the shift rails. These keep you from putting one axle into high range and the other into low range.

I have had my detent pills removed for years. I have only ever done the high/low range oops once. Just unlock the front hubs and you clear the binding. No big deal. The only way you will destroy the t-case is if you are shifting while you are moving. Not supposed to do that with a 20 in any event.

This raises a very good question. Is the Twin Stick conversion widely considered to be a worth while upgrade over the std. single stick on the Dana 20. The reason I ask is I'm planning a T-14 to T-18a swap into my '74 this winter, I know I'll likely need to do something to correct the location of the T-case shifter and the Twin Stick with some longer shafts may offer a solution.
