I decided to replace the MC with a stock replacement, put new brake shoes, rebuild the wheel cylinders and replace the rubber lines. Also picked up a remote reservoir to tab in as well.
Started on the left front since the jeep pulls hard to the right when you brake hard. Happily everything came apart with no trouble. Recent grease in the lockout and bearings. Brake shoes were pretty new as well, 80% left at least. No leaks from the wheel cylinder, but when I pulled it apart it was full of junk. Failed to put a wrench on the hardline when taking off the rubber hose at the frame. Few twists and snapped the hardline. Got that disconnected and will get a new one made up.
Master Cylinder was leaking at both ends. Came out easily though, still had good antiseize on the mounting bolts. Took the bango/brake switch off and put it on the new MC when I did the bench bleed, no leaks so it should be good. Hooked up my hardline and it was leaking though, so will replace that one also, looks to be cracked. Question on the brake stop switch, I think I have the wires back on the post they started at, but does it make a difference if they are reversed? Will I blow the lights, or just not have any brake lights?

I just replaced four lines while doing the Wilwood conversion. Bought straight lines from Napa at nearly the cost of the fittings alone. A couple of bends & you're done.

Thanks for the help on the wires. picked up some straight tubes, with the connections on them at the parts store for $6. will bend them up tonight, maybe even make it a little cleaner than previously done.

I know this thread is hella old, but, this setup looks to be exactly what I need to do on my 66 - 5. The Kaiser Willy's MC conversion doesn't fit right. The brake pedal arm hits the MC bracket at about an inch of travel. What MC did you use here?..And where did you mount the reservoir's?

I used a Willwood cylinder, don't have the p/n handy but it's on their website. I fabbed up a reservoir as I don't like the cheap plastic ones that come with the m/c.

If you can find one the military had a pressure bleeder cap for the M38A1 Jeep that fits the original MC. I bought one off of Ebay last year for less than $10 and used it to set up a pressure bleeder but it would work very well for connecting a remote reservoir. The cap is unvented and has a hose barb fitting in the center.

Nothing wrong with the original brake system IF IT IS ALL IN GOOD CONDITION, but lately I have started upgrading all of my Jeeps to 11" drums and will use a dual MC on the next one I put together.

I'd agree with that if you added the line "and the jeep is used in conditions it was designed for", i.e. not going fast on the highway. They are marginal at best. At the very best.

I have managed to get on the verge of lock up with the 9's a few times just driving around town on surface streets but my god I had to push on that pedal with everything I had. It's an adrenaline rush you can live without.

And getting the shoes balanced so it didn't pull straight for the ditch was always a exercise in frustration. :(

I lean towards stock but if you're driving on the streets in traffic then better brakes with a dual MC can't be argued with.

True enough. I don't intend much street use of my CJ2A it will be used mainly along little mountain roads for trout fishing trips. It will be trailered to camp in the mountains. It currently has the original style MC, 11" drums on front and the stock 9" on rear. It stops very well with this setup, but I plan to upgrade the rears to 11" as well just so I don't have to fiddle with keeping the 9" brakes adjusted, which can be a frustrating maintenance issue because my arthritis makes crawling under a painful exercise.

The CJ5 I am working on will be driven on streets more, and it will have 11" self adjusting drum brakes all around with a dual MC.

That being said I still have the 9" hardware & stock M/C, hopefully Tonk will out last me & someday in the far future if whoever ends up with him want's to restore to stock (& they can get gasoline out of their replicator :D ) they can run him that way. :)
