Long Drive Ahead, couple questions

Possibly planning a trip from Boise, ID to Eugene, OR for X-mas. Anyone have a rough guess of mpg on a '73 CJ5, 304 V8 w/3spd? Fresh motor, btw. Did a search, all I could find was a ton of 6cyl info, and a couple V8's w/4spd's.

Also, anyone know what pass it is you run through on I-84 Westbound, and what typical weather is over the holidays?

The best I've ever done with my 283 was about 16-17MPG. That was with 3.73's and 31" tires driving it nicely and not burying my foot in the secondaries. If I drive it "normally" I get around 14mpg. You're 304 will likely not do as well, but gearing is a factor too.

 

If it was me making the trip in a jeep I would go to Bruns and then to Chrismas Vally and down 58 into Eugene. It is I84 is faster at 75 but are you going to drive that fast. my son went to school in Boise that was the way he allways went in his 84 chevy

Very speed related. I never got worse than about 11-12mpg with my '73 304/4.27. The mileage would rise to about 14 at normal freeway speed (60-65 - I usually didn't drive a lot faster than that).

 

Take the southerly route mentioned. If you take I-84 then you have to go over the Blue Mountains and Cabbage hill which this time of year has frequent closures due to ice and snow. I have to drive that way eastbound on the 21st going to Pocatello Blackfoot area for Christmas. Have made that trip MANY times and it can get hairy going over the Blues in the ice. I go that way because I live in Portland and is the quickest way for me to go. Nickmil.

 

Thanks for the directions. It's either the 4x4 Jeep with new tires, or the Fiero thats been lowered with wide driving tires and only 4/32 tread left. So unfortunantly, Function wins over comfort. I'll definantly go the non-i84 route, not plannin on bein a speed demon anywho.

This summer I was commuting 120 miles a day with my CJ-5 which has a 304 2 barrel, dual exhaust, 3-speed, 3.73 gears and 31x10.50's. I was getting approx 15-16 MPG on the highway at speed, which here in Jersey is about 70-75mph. I would imagine that the lighter weight of the 'glass body may have helped a bit.
