I did a search but did not find anything specific to this:

Looking at a powerlock supposed to be for a 25:

    10 spline

12 point hex bolts holding on the halves

2 C31083 X (only numbers on it I could see from the pics sent to me)

dab of orange paint on it from factory or rebuild shop

It's very clean and looks good- splines look very good. I'm just not sure if it's for a 25 or 27. I have a 25 and plan to keep it

Also, at the same time I'd be putting in a powerlock, I'd be swapping in a set of Spicer axle shafts and a 2-hole pass side steering knuckle.

Whattayaknow, it worked. Hope this helps. A PL up front is only icing on the cake and not really necessary for me- I have one I'll be putting in the 44 when I do the full floater on it.

Surely this thing has a build date and part number stamped onto the side of the smaller case half ?
C31083 is merely a casting number

C31083 is a correct casting numbers as was used for the Dana 25 Powr Lok in the 1980's.
I don't have any D27 Powr Loks so I'm not sure what casting numbers were used for those.

    Update on this powerlock:

I was able to remain in touch with the owner (since November), he still has it. But I'm not able to get the numbers from him. So...

I'll go take a look at it- I'll be in the area anyhow. JPflat2A say the Dana 25 PL number is 23321.

Just in case it's not for a 25, what are the numbers for a Dana 27 and Dana 44 powerlock with 10 splines, so that I have something to check against? I'll be keeping the 10 spline axle shafts in my Dana 25.

    44 won't be 10 spline...the one pictured is not for 44

Dana 25 # 23321-X 8 bolts for ring gear attachment
You won't have to deal with axle ratio case break for D25 if I recall.

Dana 27 #'s : 22477-X IH rear axle application (will work for front)
You could have different # for 3:73 and higher gear axle ration

    Dana 30 #: 22488-X I show this as a big ??? for IH application

Best thing is take pics and look for the case numbers so we can ID the thing.
If me, I would probably buy it (if all good) as they are getting harder to find.
    Good luck

I don't know if this helps or not, but as a reference this one is out of a rear 44 from a 64 J200.

Thanks for all the help on this. I picked up the powerlock.

    stampings on the case are: 8 21 78 A H 23321 X

So, looks like it's for a Dana 25 and made in '78.

Anybody else surprised it's made so late? Jeep didn't have a Dana 25 since, what, the early 60s? Maybe another rig?

Anyhow, looks in good shape; it'll end up in the A1.

This would be Dana producing the units, not Jeep.
That's the same year I bought one and installed it in my old D25.

Many versions of Powr Loks were most commonly produced in the late 70's and early 80's.
That era saw a large demand to upgrade the earlier jeeps.
Dana 25 units built in the 60's are quite rare.
There is essentially no difference in Powr Lok quality from the 60's through the 80's.

That makes sense. Dana 25s aren't upgraded much these days, but it sure could have been different 30-40 years ago.

The USMC M38A1 (with a Dana 25) came with front and rear powerlocks in the 60s

There were some 10 spline 44 Powerlocks. There were some very early Marine Corps spec'd M38a1's with rear Powerlocks with 10 spline axles. Truly rare parts. I've had a guy in Germany wanting some for over 15 years. Maybe I should have some made but market is too small to make it worthwhile. I've held 3 sets in my hands. Two were worn beyond being useable and the third belonged to someone else. They were milsurp nos still in the wrap and cosmoline.
