How much paint should one get to repaint a 1955 CJ-5? I've picked my colors, but just curious about the amount and if I should clear coat as well, I'm not looking for show quality, but I want the paint to stay awhile, any input would be appreciated. Thanks

When I painted my 69 a couple of years ago I used about 3 quarts of color. Keep in mind I did not paint under the hood or inside the tub, this was only outside sheet metal and the windshield frame. I did have some paint left over though, so when I rolled my jeep I was able to repaint a new fender:smash:

I bought a gallon of clear coat as well since the paint I was using a base coat/clear coat. I am not a very good painter so I put a couple of extra coats of clear to allow me to cut and buff to a decent finish.

It's important to keep your primer color as close as possible to your paint color to keep from having to apply to many coats to get coverage. I painted a car red once that had black primer...needless to say it took about 3 gallons of paint to paint that color, where it would have taken half that amount had the primer been a reddish color.mehh

Here's a pic of my old Jeep.

I did three coats of single stage color on the inside of SSDutch with 1 quart. Must be different either with different paint or different gun. I used an HVLP gun.

I have painted one with 2qts but that's really pushing it. Go with 3qts and you should be good to go, if your just doing the outside!
