Herm Rebuilt T90 Question

I'm finally back working on my jeep. I bought and installed a HERM rebuilt T90 transmission. My first question is that when shifting, the engagement of the gears seems a little difficult and rough so is this normal for a new unit with straight cut gears? I imagine they will get smoother as time goes on.

Second question; is the only difference between the T86 shifter and T90 shifter is that the T86 has the back up light switch tapped hole and the T90 doesn't have it or are there other differences?

I thought the T-86 and T-90 forks are different. If this were for me, I would hope to use the T-86 casting and build a T-90 shifter with a backup light switch. Herm would certainly know.

 

T86 shifter can work but one shift fork must be changed. It’s been a long time so I don’t remember which one for sure. The 2-3 fork comes to mind but verify that.

 

I did check out the t90 shift tower Herm sent me with with the rebuild t86 into a t90. The one i mention which seems to shift hard. question 1 above. I found a real funky pin holding the 2 to 3 shift fork to the shift shaft. The shift fork was real loose on the shift shaft. I replaced with a roll pin and it tightened things up the way they should be. I'm thinking the t90 tower was never rebuilt by herm and I got what the PO did to secure the fork OR Herm installed the funky pin. Either way not good. I also found the reason for the hard shifting seems to be the the detent balls and/or springs. It shifts so hard into 2nd that when the detent ball finally lets the shift rod slide u have to be careful not to let it go into reverse. Going to check this out soon.

Glenn, Not a big deal to me. What I found was loose pin installed to hold shift fork to shift rail allowing the fork to wiggle around. I sent my video to herm and explained and asked if he checks out the tower he supplies with his rebuilds. He answered and said yes, puts them in vice to see if they operate ok. In my case I don't feel this was good enough, but I fixed it by just installing a roll pin.
Herm is on west cost, I'm on the east cost so I wasn't about to send shifter to him, when I could easily fix. In addition I would rather not deal with him if I don't have to.

Yes I ended up tearing the T90 tower down, detent ball springs were stretched by PO making shifting very hard. I took out the 2 to 3 shift fork and installed it into a T86 shifter which has the correct balls and springs. It shifts very nice now, very smooth. I like the longer shift "throw" the longer T86 shift stick offers and the back up switch. I"m so so glad it wasn't a transmission problem.
