This topic has been talked to death...but after reading as much as I can, I am still confused.

Facts: 1980 CJ5, Dana 300 TC/SR4 Transmission, Dana 30 Front/AMC 20 rear, GM 2.5L 4 Cyl. Super learning experience for a non-technical guy...front brakes and lines, front poly bushings (have a kit for the rear), steering, etc, etc etc.

I've only owned her about 5 months...finally getting it road worthy (CPA...tax season, you can guess the song and dance). Looking to change the fluids so I know starting at ground zero what I have going.

Okay, I have a suspicion of your overall opinion of the SR4 (let 'er run dry and replace after explosion). I have a T-4 the PO gave me and will probably drop that in this summer. Maybe upgrade in a couple years...

    Questions:

    1) The local auto store gave me some 'Stay-Lube" GL-5 gear oil, said that the service manual calls for this level for the TC/Transmission and differentials. However, reading various comments, this may not be correct? What oil (low sulfur(?)) is recommended?

    2) I can find the TC drain and filler bolts. However, my Chiltons manual indicates that the SR4 (see comment above) uses a "lower adaptor housing bolt" as a drain plug? Which and/or where is this bolt (one of two bolts under the skid plate)?

Thanks for any input you all may have.

    Dan

I run BG Syncroshift in the trans and t-case and GL5 Wolf's head synthetic, in the rears. 75w-90 maybe.

I had GL5 in the trans for a while, and it made it shift hard. Switched to the bg stuff, and its never run smoother. I've heard that redline MTL is also very good.
