A '71 has a rear tank like an Intermediate, but it's not an Intermediate. They started in '72 with the AMC engines. However, you'll probably get beter responses about the gas tank here.
There's no aftermarket source for a skid plate for one of these Jeeps, I'm certain. You could use a skid plate for a '71-75 and it should bolt on over the factory tank. Some '70s got the rear tank too, and that would work. The skid plate was an option list item, so not all CJs of this age got one. The original tank was supported by the frame and a front bracket, and the skid bolted up over that.
If you want a factory-style tank, you can use the tank and skid plate from a 1976-78ish CJ and that can be made to work. These parts are available new from the aftermarket. The design changes so that the tank rests on the skid plate and is held down by a strap, then the whole assembly bolts up to the frame - no more optional skid plate.
