I have a 56 speedo I'm working on. It's one of the King Seely with no replacement parts any were in the known universe. The temp and fuel gauge can be replaced with a newer set. I can adapt the faceplate so it looks correct. BUt the fuel gauge is backwards. Full is where empty should be and empty is were full should be.

To correct his, is there anyway to change the wireing so the gauge runs backwards? Any way I can change the way it works?

If I have to, I'll just put new gauges, swap the faceplates and and remember empty is full.

considering the way the guages are made, I don't think they can be made to work backward. you may want to place an ad in the classifieds to see if someone has a guage they will swap that goes in the right direction. post a pic and I'll see if the ones I have will work for you.

Actually the fuel & temp gauges for the KS speedo show up on ebay quite frequently

I went the route you're contemplating with the later SW gauges, mostly because of the built in voltage regulator. I got around the backwards fuel gauge by transplanting the KS gauge faces to the SW units & bending the sender unit float backwards.

Howard, you bent the sender unit so it floats backwards? Got any picts? Or diagrams or something? I'll be thinking on this.

I wanted to use the newer gauge just like you did. For the same reason - built in voltage regualtor. And I can find them cheap.

But I'm ready to do anyting to get it to work.

    Picts here: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52758

If anyone has a matching gauge, that would be cool.

The number on the fuel gauge faceplate is KS49453n and the number on the temp gauge is KS 49455n. I've tired to cross reference to any other numbers but I can't find anything.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks......

Sorry nope :( Just have a look at the sender, it'll be self evident.

P/Ns for the KS fuel gauge are 119197 (orange needle) 120697 (white needle)

    Temp guage is 119196 (O) & 120704 (w)

Theres a fuel gauge on ebay right now (See! Toldya So!!)-

Howard, Thanks for the info. I had looked at that one on Ebay but the number on the face is KS46009AN. That is not the same as mine so I assumed it was a different gauge.

Now I just need an external regulator.

Hang on there a sec- theres something hinky going on here, I may have given you a bad lead.

I just had a look at the pic in your link & I always thought that those units were the early 6V Stewart Warner clusters.

The meters on your unit look to be in the same location as the SW heads, The KS "silver face" had them in the opposite spots-

What is the serial # of your Jeep? I have the list of what went where, 6 volt KS "Silver face" up to serial # 49248 for the 5s, 1257 for the 6s.
6 volt SW up to 61685/13411 & the 6/12 SW after that.

No seriel number. I picked this up from the jeep junkyard. He had a few of them. THis was the one in the best shape. And when I picked it up I thought it was a S-W unit. It was not until I had it apart I found the gauges said King Seely. But I was going by the location of the temp and fuel, like the silver face one you posted.

From my research, I thought the KS were either 6 volt or 12 volt with an external regulator. The bad fuel gauge had two posts on the back. I can get picts. It also had a date stamped inside the case. I can post up the date later.

The guy also have one, not in as good a shape that had another electrical thing attached to it on a short lead. I assumed it was an external regulated one but I don't know.

That was why I orgionally asked about the newer style gauge with making it run backwards. Plenty of gauges, internal regualtor.

FWIF, I think I figured out the "bend the float backwards" deal. Did you use any heat or anything (small tubing bender?) or just grab it and bend away? I assume it needs to have the same orentation, just reversed, as before.

to bad it does not rotate or something.

Well, colour me confused. I'm wondering if stewart Warner bout out King Seely's instrumnet business in '56, thats the only thing that makes sense to me 'cause you definately have a SW style unit with KS markings.

KS never produced a 12 volt unit, only 6 & they did indeed have a regulator mounted to the back of the cluster.

re. the float I just grabbed the thing & bent, but then I'm an un-couth un-cultured clod:cry:

I checked the date stamped on the back of the speedo gauge and it says "Nov 28 1955" and "49456" under the date. Stamped on the odometer holder casting thingie it says "King Seeley corp" under that "Anne Arbor Mich. 4" and under that "Made in USA"

I found it odd the way "Seeley" was spelled. All I've ever seen, other than on the speedo, is "Seely"

As far as the 6v or 12v issue, I have no idea. I don't even know how to figure it out other than the 2 or 3 terminals on the back of the fuel gauge.

And FWIW, I researched this thread : http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36725&page=2&highlight=speedometer+howard

To figure out what I wanted. Based on this line from that post, "Edit- I just noticed that the temp & fuel guages on your speedo are in the SW positions, the KS is opposite-" (from someone named Howard - hehe) I thought I was getting a SW 12v gauge.

THe jeep mystery deepens. I can take more picts of the different speedo's when I go down.
