I know you have an FSM, but as a note the connecting rod side play is listed as being .004 to .010, which I have to assume is saying that is the acceptable clearance range.

Just for clarification, maybe I read too much into it but I thought you were saying after you had the connecting rods tight you could twist them, but I guess you meant just an initial test fit of the rod itself?

I had a closer look at the twisty action , on the theory that maybe the rod bores or journals were egg shaped I rigged a dial indicator & pushed/pulled the rods sideways, indicates movement was 1-1/2 thou on all 4 which matches what the plastiiguage was telling me. My conclusion at this point is that even with only 2 thou clearance a noticeable twist action is normal. I didn't measure the fore-aft clearance.

Bumped into two more issues :(

First was when I cleaned out the oil pan I found something that looked like a chipped tooth, it was- today I found half a tooth missing from the oil pump drive gear

Thankfully when I rebuilt the pump I had the presence of mind to buy two gears but its a PITA to get those things off, those pins are impossible to get out so I chucked it up in the lathe & went at it with a cutoff tool right next to the pin. I was then able to drive the end off exposing the pin which I punched out allowing me to drive off the toothed section. Of course when I put the new one on I put it on backwards. This time I drilled out the pin & got it off with a bearing puller.

2nd thing I bumped into was setting the crankshaft end play- without any shims it was 11 thou, had to use the lathe make a relief cut on the thrust washer to get it within spec.

I did put the mystery rods back in on the theory somebody had a good reason to put them there to begin with.

The engine is mostly back together, tomorrow it go's back in & hopefully runs.

Engine is back in Tonk & runs, which is a little worrisome as I don't know why it stopped to begin with

Oil pressure seems good, or at least the light goes out while it's just cranking, which is a hopeful sign.

Well then, oil light going out while cranking definitely means good oil pressure. :) Glad it's going again. :hurrican:

I know what you mean though, you know what happened, but not really knowing why can be bothersome to say the least.

Howard, glad you got it back together. I had a similar problem shortly after my rebuild. Although mine definitely turned out to be a cheap oil pump (a problem I rectified by paying a King's ransom for an NOS one on eBay.) Wishing you luck.

Went for a test drive today, engine works perfectly, got a big hole in the side of the transmission.

 Man, I just don't know what to say. :( But, apparently the transmission still functioned and you were able to drive home?

Howard I will send some Jeep gods for Tonka. Sounds like your jeep needs all the help she can get. I know you must be disgusted.

Yup, shifts fine, actually less noisy when it running in gear under load than sitting there in neutral.

I've already sourced a rebuildable replacement but it's gonna be a few months before I can devote any more time to it, got some other calls on my time for the next few months.
