Factory Service manual!!!!

I have been using a Haynes Jeep manual that I have had for years, that being said I won an original 1971 factory service manual off of Ebay several weeks back for $9.99, not a reprint an original August 1971 printed one, my Haynes manual is now in the garbage so to speak. The factory service manual has at least 1000X's more info in it than the Haynes or Chiltons, I was utterly astounded by the info, engine codes, frame measurements, how to reline a clutch disk, serial # abbreviations, everything you could need was in there, I mean that in a literal since, there is virtually no question about a stock Universal CJ you could ask here on this board that the answer for it could not be found in the Factory Service manual and with the illustrations most of the factory tools could be fabbed for disassembly and such.

Buy all means get one, it would be worth the money at 2 or 3 times the going price at Turners and such!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can not believe I have worked on my jeep without this thing for so long.

 

I bought one years ago when I first bought my Jeep. I lucked out and the auto parts store was getting rid of their library. It is a GREAT source of information!

There seems to be a gap in reprints around 1970 for Jeep vehicles. I know that,for the full-sized Jeeps (FSJs), there are no reprints available that cover the late 60s and 70-71 (the 232, 327 and 350 powered cars). All the AMC manuals starting in '72 are available AFAIK, either from Turner as reprints or from DC.

This manual on Turner's site http://www.thejeep.net/catalog/prod...78&PHPSESSID=1871bfc710f097e732f35351de0b5f1d claims to include the CJs through '71. I don't know what year this manual was actually printed, and it may not specifically include info about the V6-AMC era Jeeps. There's a lot of similarity in the late and early Kaiser Jeeps and early AMC Jeeps, so that may be why they claim that the maunual covers through 1971.

I bring this up because, if you have one of the 69-70-71 CJs, the Turner reprint will be worthwhile, though you may want to also search for a real Jeep manual for your year/model. If you see one of these for sale, it would be a good deed to post about it here as someone will definitely want it. Any Jeep manual (ie FSJ, Jeepster) from this era would be of interest.

 

One of the features that I find cool about a TSM is the material on options and things in the lattter part of the manual. I was leafing through my parts manual and discovered an option on '74 and '75 jeeps for a hydraulic clutch kit for turning the Jeep into a right hand drive. Very cool. Now if only I could find one....

What else works really well is a factory parts manual. Now, you may never need any of the part numbers, but is sure will show you exploded diagrams, what will interchange, and give you all the bolt / thread sizes for every nut and bolt in the jeep.

 

It was the first thing I bought after the Jeep.

 

Always check ebay, they pop up there quite frequently. I have to agree, the haynes manual might be good for toilet paper in pinch, but the factory manual is the way to go if you want real info.

 

Is there a CD version of this classic publication? With my eyes, it helps to be able to zoom in on figures.

 

No, I don't think so. Use the analog zoom (magnifying glass - I use one all the time ).

 

Are the manuals specific to the year listed, or do they cover that year, and everything before it?

The one I got is a 1971 book but it does show all the stuff from the previous years and shows some superceded parts like switches and such.

 

I purchased an original 1973 technical service manual for CJ, DJ, Commando, and Wagoneer then purchased the '74 JEEP. Any differences between the year models? I have heard the ignition system may have been modified between those years...

 

Hard to specify every difference without a side-by-side comparison. '73 was the last year for points ignition; in '74 Jeep used the Prestolite breakerless ignition. That's the largest single difference I can think of. There may be some emissions systems differences, and wiring changes. '74 may have a voltmeter instead of the ammeter - not sure if that changed in '74 or '75. Some different accessories, like Levi's trim. You should be ok with the '73 manual.

Thanks for the info. Based on that, I would entertain a trade with anyone in possession of the 74 TSM for the 73 TSM. Any out there?

Got mine on EBAY but not willing to give it up without the 74... Manual has all pages and is bound. Few oil spots here and there but in excellent shape otherwise.

My project is a 1959 CJ5. They do not seem to cover the Willys years.
