F134 Fuel pump question

    I have replaced the fuel pump on my '65 CJ6A with an overhauled unit.

    It will only run until the fuel in the carb bowl is used and the glass bowl on the fuel pump never fills more than approximatly half way. I've cleaned the tank and blew out the lines.

    My question is, should the fuel pump glass bowl have more gas in it than half full. I appreciate any suggestions.

    The bowl should be mostly full. Mine get probably 2/3rds or better full. I'll bet you don't have the right pump. Might look right but not have the right action. I bought one one time that did what yours does. Would start and idle, but once I started driving it would run out of gas.

    Which brings about the question of how do you know what is right? I know there are some with the added benefit for vacuum wipers. But what else to look for?

    The fuel pump on our Tux was new. I took it off and made the mistake of leaving it to soak in some Simple Green, which ate the material out of it. I had a new one on the shelf I was saving for my L-head in my GPW and decided I would use it. I haven't yet installed it. They "look" the same. Something else I should be aware of?

    If it was bought new from one of the normal suppliers it's probably fine. Rebuilt stuff from regular parts stores is obviously sometimes iffy.

    I just went through the same thing with my fuel pump. Replaced the gas tank. Then it would still just run at idle speed. Give it some gas and it shut off. Turned out the fuel line was stopping up and the gas tank had some gasket material laying around and plugging the hole. When I blew some air in it, it the air would pass from the fuel pump to the tank. It would unclog the stoppage in the reverse direction of the fuel flow.

    A quick way to check your fuel pump is to take a small gas can, run a rubber fuel line from the can directly to the supply side of the fuel pump and see if it starts filling up the glass bowl on the pump.

    I bet you have a clog in your tank outlet, or maybe in your fuel line.

    From what you said, you have isolated the problem and it is somewhere from the tank to the pump.

    Do you have an inline fuel filter that may have clogged up?
