I'm blowing these things out like crazy :(

I think the issue is that I had a stainless exhaust system installed & I think that it vibrates more than muffler molly would. Anyhow something is doing a job on the gaskets .

Any recommendations for a "problem solver" gasket?

    Thanks,

    H.

I have had the same issue a couple times lately. Not sure why.

Is it randomly blowing out or is it by chance leaking at the firewall side?

Blowing out on both sides, top & bottom, right in the middle toward the fender & the block.

I'll bet it's the material they're made from then.

Doesn't seem to make a difference what style- asbestos(?) covered tin or the ones with the metal ring in the middle both go bad.

Is the exhaust pipe flange welded on so that a little bit of the pipe goes up in the manifold?

What do you have for exhaust hangers? Is there rubber in it? Stock locations?

Stock style exhaust except in stainless. The clamp snugs the pipe up nice & tight to the manifold & there's no movement at all at the muffler end.

No, the pipe is flared nice & wide to butt against the gasket/manifold & the clamp is loose.

I'd weld a ring in the exhaust so it just goes up past the gasket, keeping the highest heat directly off the gasket.

I't hard to keep it from leaking without the part extending into the manifold.....or should I say almost impossible to keep from leaking?

I used two gaskets. Made a tighter seal compared to using only one.

So, after reading all the way through this thread, I have to assume that you all are talking about the lower manifold to exhaust pipe gasket, and not the manifold to block gaskets. Which are what came to mind first when I started reading this.

I thought the implication was clear.

    I guess it wasn't.:(

    Sorry, won't happen again.

    I promise.

I looked at the remains of an (original ?) j-bend pipe where it connects to the manifold flange from an M38A-1. It has almost 3/8" of pipe that extends above the flange and gasket, aligning up into the manifold.
In post 11, fhoehle suggested welding a ring to the top your pipe that would essentially duplicate how my old rusty pipe is.

As my pipe is actually flared that won't work- I'm thinking welding in a shot section of pipe into the flared bell if I can find something that won't rust away to nothing in a year or two.
