Interesting discussion. Halting forward motion as an original intended purpose makes logical sense. Can't help but wonder if it also helps in the event that isolator mounts are old, worn or damaged. Like an unintended fix when the underlying root cause issue is the isolators, excessive drivetrain movement or a grabby clutch disk?

First question, when did they start with these? Since MB?

Second, if it was factory removed at some point, clutch cable vs linkage or whatever, does the engine not still have the ability to move forward?

Not sure about early prototype vehicles but mass produced MB, GPW, M38, NM38A1,and all early CJ's with T90 transmissions should have the cable stay.
They were also used on Dauntless CJ's with T86AA because that transmission uses the exact same low profile insulator.

The stay cable was used to help keep the drivetrain in its original location; i.e. to halt any forward movement of the engine into the radiator. Consider the weight of the L and F head engines compared to the size of the motor mounts. They supposedly weigh close to 500lb fully dressed. A chevy V8 is a little more (around 575 so Im told) but their motor mounts are huge compared to the L and F head motor mounts. I recently had this conversation with an 85yr guy who owned a jeep shop for decades and he claimed that was their purpose. Add some deterioration of the rubber due to oil leakage and age in the motor mounts and it seems to make sense.
Ron Fitzpatrick carries the stay cables- order one for an MB.

Also, I have a T98 in a 46. I took it out of a 67 that it was in and it had a stay cable included so I kept it with the T98 when I put it in.

    FWIW,
    Mike

I have that setup, V6 and T86AA. What does the low profile insulator look like?
