Okay I picked up a 1966 cj5 225 dauntless. I am going to try to fire up after 20+ years if setting. I changed the oil after checking if motor is free. Bought cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and came to this question. I notice that the cap is wired a bit different then my 71 with the dauntless. I have the prestolite on the 71 and have #1 on the cap in the same location as my manuals picture. I can't find an illustration or photo showing the location of #1 on the cap of a delco when in place on the motor. Could some one please send me a picture of your delco distributor in place as it should be? Thanks
side note/ rotor corresponds same as cap on the delco.

There may be a factory orientation. You understand that it's otherwise arbitrary? You can put the distributor in with any clocking as long as the rotor points to the #1 wire at the #1 cylinder compression stroke TDC, and the wires are in the proper rotational order. usually you pick the clocking that is most convenient.

True with evenfire engines like v-8's, 4 cylinders, and most V-6's, but not with oddfire v-6's. the cam lobes on the distributor shaft must be located correctly for the points to be timed to which cylinder the rotor is firing as they are not evenly spaced on an oddfire engine.

I will take a picture or video after work tomorrow. I'm going to change out the points with pretronix on the delco. I was not getting fire today. Maybe going to rob Peter to pay Paul and swap known good parts from the 71 to the 66 to see where the motor is at. Thanks for input

The principle does not change, but with odd fire you have an additional constraint. So now you have 3 different locations you can use, instead of 6.

The theory doesn't change but typically you cannot get enough rotation out of the distributor body to do what you suggest as the vacuum advance housing hits the intake manifold or other components.

Looking down on dist and facing toward the front, the dist will need the vacuum can pointing to the 2 o'clock position (keeps vacuum line clear of fan) and the number 1 (as stamped into the cap) will be facing forward. Post #6 has it right. I have found this to be the best position for the dist. That's not to say you can't install it in other positions.

That's it. Thank you for posting the pictures. I will fallow up and let you know what it ends up having been. Having not anticipated the purchase of another jeep, I have to wait on buying parts till after Hallidays. I came across this cj on cl. The ad was vague at best with some bad pictures stating " great winter project" best offer. I could make out the v6 emblems and wanted the Meyers hard top with doors. We settled on 850$ delivered to my house. I was not sure what I was getting but as of now it's looking promising I may have a beater jeep to run around in.
