Sorry I am a novice with axles. Can someone tell me from the photo if there is a posi unit in this rear axle? There was a piece of tag on the lower right diff cover but it is broken off. The driver side tag says 994196 3.73 S 41-1 I know that means 3.73 gears, but I am not sure about the other numbers.

it appears to be a Trac Lok limited slip which could be factory installed

9xxxxx is a Jeep PN, from the 50s and 60s. Somebody can look it up.

Looks like a Dana Trak-lock to me too, likely factory installed if it's in a '71.

A factory LSD will have a smaller tag that says 'use LS lube' or something like that. Factory tags are often missing though...

    well, it's hard to describe
the Trac Loc case is kinda "squared off" in design compared to a std diff case
also the 2 c-clips on the cross shaft
if you look closely, you can see them

Yup, she's a Trac Lock although that part number cast in the housing doesn't show up in the parts manual as either a complete diff assembly or a bare housing. Course that don't mean diddly cause they were always changing up numbers..
