1st off, I'm very sorry if this has been asked and answered many many, times before. However, I have been searching and racking up a ton of info on swapping 30 spline shafts in my 19 spline carrier and still am unsure of being able to use my 19 spline carrier. I WILL be using Herm's 30 spline full float kit but I just do not know how to go about using my carrier with these axles. Do I just change the side gears in the carrier to 30 spline gears? Or must I get a new carrier altogether, like a detroit?

Usually they are swapped in with a locker (that is what I have done). Nick would be the one or Herm himself to answer if the side gear swap will work or if you have to change anything else.

The "carrier" section is the central cast iron portion of the axle housing assembly.
The "case" sets within the carrier section.
The differential ring, side gears and pinion mate gears mount direct onto the differential case.
All D44 cases have the same axis I.D. to accept the various sized axle shafts.
D44 cases with 10 splines and 19 splines have a smaller O.D. for the carrier bearing than a 30 spline case.
In other words the cone / roller assembly of the carrier bearing is of a slightly larger diameter for the 30 spline case.
This larger carrier bearing I.D. increases strenght for 30 spline cases.
The differential carrier cups remain the same between 10, 19 and 30 spline units.
You can use a 10 or a 19 spline case but the strength will be slightly diminished.
All D44 housing assemblies will accept the 30 spline case into the carrier.

30 spline axles are mainly superior beacause the diameter is greater than that of 10 or 19 spline axles.
Unless you go to a limited or locking case you will gain very little to switch over to 30 spline axle shafts.
The pinion mate gears in an open D44 case become the weak link.

Ok, so I will be looking to use a detroit true-trac 30 spline unit in my dana 44. Would I need the 30 spline bearings?

I went with the 30 spline Detroit locker. Good choice with the full floater conversion.

I'm not that familiar with Detroit True Trac specifications but I would expect that they produce 2 different gear driven limited slips for D44.
One for use with 19 spline axle shafts and another for use with 30 spline axle shafts.
I would expect those 2 units to use different cone/roller assemblies yet have the same identical bearing cups.
The carrier cone /roller and the carrier bearing cups should be uniform with the standard Dana Spicer cases.

Short answer. If your True-Trac is 30 spline you will need the 30 spline carrier bearings. You cannot put 30 or 27 spline side gears in a 19/10 spline case or vice verse. The exception to this is a Powerlock limited slip which you can change side gears at will.
As Oldtime said the part that the ring gear bolts to and houses the differential gears (pinion or "spider" and side gears) is the case. The carrier on a Dana 44 is the part the tubes are pressed into and houses the ring and pinion, associated bearings, case, etc.

One other thing with the True-Trac. If using in a rear application it needs to be for a rear application. I recently found out the gears are cut in such a way as they are different from a front application vs a rear application. My understanding is they can be taken apart and the gears reversed however.

    Detroit TRUE TRACS for D44
    up to 3.73 @ 30 spline = 913A127
    from 3.92 @ 30 spline = 913A128
    up to 3.73 @ 19 spline = 912A133
    from 3.92 @ 19 Spline = 912a134

    Roger,
In general the Truetrac's are an all gear driven limited slip type of differential unit that were/are manufactured by Eaton Corp.
As noted above the 913a127 is a 30 spline unit used for gear ratios of 3.72 and numberical lower (faster).
These links will show you how it works:
    Eaton Detroit Truetrac

And this link to the exploded view should show you how it is built

If the tapered axle can be converted to 30 spline with a ff kit, then a selectable locker could be installed, correct?

The 30 spline case will fit in any D44. My D44 could hav been a 10 spline, but it doesn't matter, the aftermarket 30 spline power lock fit in fine. I was looking at an Elocker, just out of my price range at the time.

Yes from what I have seen... I put OX Lockers in mine with the 30 spline FF Kit. My kit is a Warn, but I was talking to Herm when I did mine and actually sent him my axles to measure for his 30 spline kit.

Out of curiosity, were there axle options on the Warn FF Kits or were they all 30 spine?

For all practical purposes all Dana 44 Warn FF kits were 30 spline. Some 19 axles were made (very few) but never sold over the counter or in a kit. They may have found their way out the back door however. You will never get a 19 spline warrantied as they officially don’t exist.
There were other spline counts for other axles depending on what side gears were available for that differential. Example: Dana 35 used 27 spline iirc and there was a FF kit in that spline count for that application.

I am about done collecting parts to put a 30 spline ARB RD116 in a Dana 44 axle. I was talking to G2 today about their 35-2033 Dana 44 install kit. They said it would work but that earlier Dana 44 required a couple extra parts due to a smaller pinion, Timken 25577 and 25523, LM 104949 and 104910. The ARB came with larger carrier bearings and I know there is 10/19 and 33 spline bore variation but I cant find any other reference to varying pinion sizes. Any one have any ideas?

The inner and outer pinion bearings do not change if that's what you are asking...

Interesting, we just finished tearing into an old Warn FF 44 setup and guess what... It's was open, with 4.27 gears, Premium Hubs and 19 spline.
