My '67 CJ5 didn't have any front axle seals on the Dana 27 when I tore it down - leaked all the axle lube all over the brakes. I obtained new seals. Upon inspection the outer shell of the seal is .275" thick. The inset or reveal that the seal fits in to is only .120" deep. This leaves it .155" proud. Does this seem correct or is there a seal with a thinner (or shorter) shell? Thanks!

I assume you are talking thickness and not OD. I don't think it will be a problem. I replaced the seals in my 27 many years ago so I can't tell you if they were proud or not. As long as the seal doesn't interfere with the carrier bearings, it should be fine.

I just did mine. I don't remember them sticking out into the carrier housing at all.
The seals were Federal Mogul # 40576S
If that's any help to you

Thanks, the spec on those seals is .250", which is slightly smaller/shorter than mine but would still leave it above the plane of the reveal that it fits in to. I'm going to pick up one of those just to check it out.
