I have a 1965 CJ5 with a ford 302 mated to a t86 transmssion and it looks like the PO did a number on the clutch bellcrank setup. As you can see from the pics its crooked. They have the bellcrank held in by a 1/2" bolt on the frame side and a stud coming out of the transfer case. Also the clutch release fork is hacked up. would one of those bellcrank kits help fix the mounting position by allowing me to use the smaller holes on the frame next to that bolt to properly align the bellcrank? Also should I just by the proper clutch release fork so I can mount the linkage properly? On the extreme end, would I have to move the motor. I'm actually going to be making new mounts so it wouldn't be a big deal to move the motor a little.

    Thanks

There's *supposed* to be a bracket on the frame that holds the tube (11-02 in the diagrams). On the inboard side the tube either goes to a ball stud on the xfer case or a bracket depending on the transmission used.

As for the tube itself these exist in different flavours- there's a specific p/n for the f4 & a different one for the V6, the difference being the relative rotation of the two arms to each other; I would not hazard a guess which one would work best for you.

With the body off I'd go for the new fork, in fact I'd pull the tranny off & check everything for wear.

I think you first need to get your motor into whatever position it needs to be in............then address the linkage...........and fab whatever mounts you need......on both sides.

The clutch pressure plate or maybe the fork or perhaps the ratio at the pedal or the cross arm / bell crank is in question as it bent that ball coming off the TC case from either the misalignment or the force required to move it..........also that bellcrank looks short and should fit closely side to side with no large gaps..........maybe that motor & trans is offset some?

Might be as simple as getting the ball stud with bracket to utilize the two smaller holes you mentioned...

While you are at it, you likely want to get a new ball stud for the t-case side as well (looks as if the ball end is likely worn right off judging from the pic). Good to put a little thread sealant on that one too when installing as the mount hole passes through into the case.

I believe the motor is in the correct spot or close to it because the transmission mounts and crossmember seem to be in the correct spot, and all the driveshafts seem to be lined up correctly.

But I definitely do plan on pulling the tranny and transfer case to give them a good look over and install a new clutch release fork at very least.

The bell crank looking short is probably because it sitting up against the frame and not in that ball mount and bracket. Probably will be picking up one of those bell crank kits and checking positions.

I saw that chain drive system for the clutch and was curious about it, but a little reluctant to try it. Something seems funny about it.

I’ve read nothing but good reviews on the chain linkage. Installed on my build. Not tested so no real feedback from me except it was very easy to install.

The A&A chain system works pretty well...........does need cleaning and lube on a regular basis like any chain system...........

Personally I still like the old 70's CJ cable clutch system for the under the floor mounted clutch pedal.....have to keep them lubed up if your going through water regularly but works great as long as you take it a part yearly and lube the cable........

I think Im going to go with the AA Chain System, it seems like it gets nothing but good reviews, and with the ford 302 it will give me a little more flexibility in the system. Looking at the install directions, this complete removes the clutch bellcrank?
