Both rear turn signals flash

I have completed my rewire job and am ready to road test my Jeep, but :? I have one lingering problem I can't seem to resolve. I have searched several times, but am not finding my problem.

When I activate my turn signal switch, I get the correct turn signal in the front but both turn signals in the back will flash. This happens with lights off, parking lights on and head lights on.

I have what I assume to be the original tail lights with 2 wires from each light. One wire is connected to the parking light wire, while the other is connected to both the brake light wire and the turn signal wire.

It appears that I am getting voltage back though the opposite turn signal by way of the single brake light wire. Would a diode help resolve this problem? Am I missing something?

    Thanks,

You should have 1 wire to the back for both taillights, and 2 wires to the back, 1 for individual brake light. If I'm understanding what you wrote you have 1 wire for both brake lights? You can/should have 1 brake wire into the turn signal switch and the switch splits it into 2 circuits.

you should have 12 volts on the brake switch (brown wire). When the brake switch is activated the 12 volts passes to the turn signal. From the turn signal there should be two separate wires going back to the rear brake/turn lights.

When you do not have the turn signal on and depress the brakes the 12 volts should go through the turn signal and back to the tail lights on, if I remember correctly, the orange and yellow wires. Note that each wire is separately connected to the turn signal on two different points, so that each wire going aft can be controlled separately.

So, lets say the turn signal is on left turn, and you press the brakes, the 12 volts goes 'normally' to the turn signal from the brake switch and passes through the switch to the RIGHT tail lamp. Thus right lamp stays on.

The connection between the brake switch and the LEFT tail lamp is broken by the turn signal switch, and the 12 volts that is passed to the left tail lamp comes from the flasher circuit.

It gets a little more complicated if you have 4 way flashers, but the 4 way system is an add on, and does not materially change the basic circuitry.

You could have a bad ground as well. I have 3 wires running back from the turn signal switch to the rear (stop/turn/tail).

Thanks for the quick response everyone.

Glenn, I rewired my Jeep using a 20 circuit kit from EZ2Wire and just verified that I only have 4 wires running to the rearend of the jeep:
    1)Parking lights
    2)LR turn light
    3)RR turn light
    4)brake light.
I'm guessing that since this was a generic kit that it assumes different lights will be used for the turn signals and brakes.

Just went out to look at how I have the turn signal wired (a Sparton SCS-3R ) . I have 7 wires and have routed them as follows (got this from a previous search of the threads on this site).
    White: 12v thru flasher
Brown:Brake light switch & Brake light power
    Orange: RR turn signal
    Dk Blue/Grey: RF turn signal
    Yellow: LF turn signal
    Lt Blue: LR turn signal
    Black: not used

I'm thinking I need to separate the 2 wires going to the brown wire (they were both wired into a female spade connector when I received the kit, so I left them together) but not sure where to route the brake light switch wire. to the black lead? maybe then it will work as kamel described. Looks like I will be playing with wires tonite.

I do have a wire from the kit labeled hazard. Just how hard is it to wire this system for 4 ways? I have an extra push/pull switch I could use to activate them, just not sure how to wire them up.

    Thanks again,

I might be wrong but I think the turn signal switch has to be setup for 4 way flashing for them to work. Maybe the black wire is for the brake light power in? I just reread that you say it's the brown wire. Shouldn't take too much to figure it out. Like you said they must have sent you a harness for separate brake and turn signal lights.

Got it. Thanks again to everyone. I found the thread that details the circuitry of the Sparton switch and that emboldened me to dig into the guts of the switch. I found that, with the Sparton switch, I do not need the brake light wire that goes to the rear end of the jeep as the brake lights work in conjunction with the turn signals. I remember reading that in a thread somewhere, but now it makes sense. So after I eliminated that wire from my tail lights, my turn signals work correctly, but my right rear brake light will not light up when the brakes are depressed. When I opened up the switch I found alot of gunk and the power wire was shorted out against a metal clip in the switch, causing it not to work correctly. I tried to rig it a couple times, but one of the POs must have used up all 9 lives, because I can't get it to work correctly 2 times out of 10.

So it looks like I am in the market for a new turn signal switch. Any recommendations?

    Tango Mike,

Glad you got it figured out and understand how it works. At the top of the tech section is a sticky that lists parts suppliers. Walck's 4WD is my favorite. Also in Pep Boys I've seen switches, I'm sure places like Napa would have them too.

am happy with my signal stat. got it at FLAPS, but have seen them in semi truck parts places.

Be sure to get the 7 wire one, not the 4.

Just installed my new Signal-Stat 900 turn signal switch (from NAPA ~ $64) and am warming the engine up to take 'er out for a test drive. Thanks again for your help.

    Pics coming soon...
