I saw a picture of a lime green renegade once. On the battery holddown, on the passenger side, there was a bracket that ran from the top of the battery holddown bolt to the firewall. When I say holddown bolt I mean the actual long threaded rod. I have the hole in the firewall right where it would go.

Does anyone know if this bracket is stock? If so anyone have a closeup pic?

It looks like I could fab something from 1/8" thick by 1" wide strap steel pretty easy. Couple bends drill a couple holes.

Also, later model CJs had a bracket on both sides (that come from the bottom of the tray), while my early cj just has the bracket on the driver side. The later CJ bracket looks like it would bolt up using that extra hole and maybe be a little stronger. Anyone tried it to see if it fits?

    Thanks

dg, bolts right in....I thought so.....

John, I've looked at your album several times....that engine looks GOOD. I don't see a good shot of the battery tray though.

I am asking this because since I have fenderwell headers, one of the braces on the bottom of the tray can't be used. It still feels plenty sturdy, but I would go to the new style just to be safe...future plans call for stock manifolds and exhaust, which means I'll be able to reinstall the brace...in either event I will probably fab the L bracket once a get a good pic of it.

when i install my headers i used a hot wrench to bend the lower brace to clear the headers works fine.

here's a picture from the fsm of the L brack your looking for.

Y'know, I found that pic last night, but I am talking about the other side! I will have to check my firewall again, but I am 98% sure I don't have a hole for the L bracket in that pic. DG, it doesn't look like you do either. I do have the hole on the other side that is slightly higher, that the newer battery tray bolts to. My stock tray doesn't have a bracket to the firewall on the pass side, so that hole is empty.

The renegade pic I saw had a similar L bracket on the pass side, that is the one I am going to fabricate.

    Jim, you the man.

My battery is a little shorter, so I think I am going to end up with about a 45 degree bend at the top and bottom.

Jim, let me ask you this--Does the battery holddown bolt on the driver side run inside or outside the brace that bolts to the firewall? mine is on the outside but seems like maybe it should be on the inside.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I love this board.

Greg: Mine's on the outside also. And I have only 1 brace under the tray that's sort of on the drivers side. Diidn't know that there was supposed to be 2. But it does seem sturdy and clears the headers. It's good to know if you need a new one, the later models will bolt right in. :)
