So im looking to buy my first CJ-5....its a '72 and basiclly i'd like to know what you all think of them...or more importantly what i should be looking for.... is there any thing that is prone to breakage!?!? i can remember growing up with my neighbor having an early CJ-5 w/a 401 and him snapping the frame twice... anyways... so what should i be looking for? are there any bad driveline parts? things to avoid.... Any advice would be great...

    Welcome from Boston!

Basic questions first - where are you located? Is this Jeep stock, and if not what's been changed? V8 or 6? Accessories? How does it drive? Any rust? Do you like it?

well i got and ran the VIN #.... 258 6cyl "regular" (what does the regular mean??)... 4spd... so now my questions shift to...

What sort of 4spd does it have (is it worth a damn??)

and for that year-range should it have a T-18/20 or D300?

if its a 18/20 i would guess then it has a D44? (possibly th eoffcentered one) or is that an AMC20?

basically im trying to figure what i'll be getting myself into...and are the "intermediates" worth it....?

    again...whatever your comments are...they are appreciated...thanks!

If the drivetrain is stock than the 4 spd is a t-18 coupled to a d/20 and the rear end is a centered dana 44. This is a good jeep. It most likely came with front drum brakes. A conversion to disc would be a nice improvement. The 258 is a great engine. If you do not have power steering, this would also be an easy upgrade. Oh...the regular means it uses regular gas.
