85 Toyota swap

    Can anyone tell how much of the mechanicals can be swapped over to a 61 CJ 5 from a 1985 Toyota 4x4 pick up with the 22 R motor?

    Axles could be swapped in, but you will need adapters for the brakes, and the driveshafts. You may run out of space trying to put the engine, tranny and tcase in, because the Toyota units are rather long and were setup for a truck. It could be done, but i envision the rear driveshaft being extremely small.

    Could the toyota 4 cyl. be matched up to the jeep trans and transfer?

    There maybe adapters out there, but i havnt seen any. The yota motor is nice, but the 22r is only a bit more powerful than the Fhead. If you had an RE with the fuel injection now that would be a nice swap. But i would take measurements and see what you come up with for the total combo length. people have put suzuki samurai engine tranny and tcase into jeeps and it works, because it is about the same wheel base. The yota is just a bit longer.

    We had an early 90's Geo Tracker that had a Toyota motor (From the factory) You get an overhead valve, more horspower, power steering and air conditioning in a compact package, it too was EFI.
    I think the weight was about the same as the CJ5.
    I never mesured the wheel base but I'll bet it was close to the CJ.

    How is the Toyota set up, divorced transfer case?

    You can put any engine in any vehicle, given enough time and money. With the GM engines, they use the GM bell and the long input shaft from a Jeep utility truck. This input shaft has enough length to put a plate adapter between the bell and transmission. A similar setup is probably doable with the 22R, but you may have to machine a plate adapter.

    Frankly, there are several modern 4-cylinders (Pinto, Chevy II, Mercruiser, Jeep 150, Iron Duke, likely others) that are easy swaps to the T-90. The 22R may be a good motor, but lack of an aftermarket adapter seems (to me) to greatly outweighs any advantage over these other engines.

    With the samurai drivetrain you can get fuel injection, you get a 5 speed tranny so highway speeds are better ,and with the samurai axles, they are a 3rd member type axle so changing gears is real easy, as well as gear ratios up to 5.29 came factory in Trackers, which would swap into samurai housings. The Tcase is a divorce design and have alot of choices of lower gear ratios. That is why people change samurai stuff into jeeps. It is not that common, but it happens. The debate on whether to put japanese parts in an American vehicles is a personal one.

    Still sammy axles. You can build the hybrid for the back and use a sidekick rear and get the bigger r&p, other wise you need two fronts because the rear sidekick carrier wont fit into the back samurai axle housing. But your still rolling sammy axles. Dont get me wrong though I do like samurais really well. 5.29 I think only came in the autos.

    Sammi axles compared to Yotas are definately smaller. For the size of the rig, the sammis would be good, up to a certain size. In relevance to the post. I was bringing the point that a samurai engine, tranny and Tcase would fit better than a Yota setup because of length. I believe there are adapters to run the 22r to a samurai tranny. That maybe a better setup because the samurai gear boxes are a little shorter. It can be argued with teh strength of the samurai transmission. They have held up to abuse, the Yota is a bit more robust, but the battle is fitting them in a short wheelbase vehicle. with money anything can work, but you will end up stretching the wheelbase a tad to fit all yota stuff. But then again we dont know what size tires are in the futur ofr the rig, and how the owner will drive it, with pedal to the metal or with a lite foot and lots of finess. Alot of factors in the end descision.
