79 CJ5 with 304 v8 Exhaust Question

Howdy all,

I have a 1979 CJ-5 with the 304 V8. My uncle bought it from the assembly line and within the first month, had the original exhaust torn out and installed a dual exhaust out the back and bent 90 behind the back tires with corvair turbo mufflers. Well, all that is rusting out. The passenger side pipe from mullfer back fell off lately.

So, what would people recommend for a replacement? I still want the dual (any reason not to?). I like that I can walk on either side of the jeep and hear the rumble. Speaking of rumble, I like it. What mufflers should I go to keep a good deep rumble?

I believe you will get as many different answers as there are mufflers out there, and all the answers will be different.
First off, I would stay with the duals, IMHO.
Then as for what kind of muffler, personal likes will determine that... if you like loud, then a glass-pack like Cherry Bombs, or Red Hots. Quieter would be stock replacement. I personally will be going for the Flowmaster Extreme Offroad series, quieter inside (less resonance), rumbly outside, and good flow characteristics (and they just look TOUGH).

Tastes vary. I'd say go as quiet as possible, but from what you posted that's already out. I want to keep what hearing I have left.

 

Not that I don't want to hear myself think... but I love the sound of a V8. Those Flowmaster Extreme Off-Road Series looks promising.

I have very little exposure to this sort of thing, so I want to hear from everyone and what they have and like/don't like.

 

Due to the small space on a CJ-5, maybe the Flowmaster Hushpower (I think that's what they're called) would be a good choice, although, I don't think they are chambered mufflers like other flowmasters....just a thought.

I'm in the same boat, wanna go away from the fenderwell headers and go back to manifolds or shorty headers so that I can get the exhaust back inside the frame rails, and out the back.

 

The Flowmaster Hushpower comes in 2 flavors, the Hushpower II muffler, and a resonator. The Hushpower is oval, 24" overall length, 4" thick and 5.5" wide, and is a straight through design. The Flowmaster Extreme Offroad is oval, 19" overall length, 4" thick and 9.75" wide, and is constructed of 14 gauge diamond steel plate (14 ga. is just over 1/16 inch thick). The way my headers sit, either muffler would fit fine. Ultimately, the final choice will be what you like best, and what fits best in your specific application.

The custom exhaust is where it's at. I don't think the flowmasters fit under the jeeps very well. There just isn't a lot of room under there. Unless you don't mind them hanging down some. I had turbo bullet (generic) mufflers and full dual exhaust tucked up inside the frame of green jeep. Sounds OK, maybe a bit on the quiet side for my taste (timgr would probably like it). I think I tossed back $100 to have it done local. The worked off a new set of inside the frame headers that I installed. The only choices you will have to make for the custom exhaust is muffler, outlet position and type/size of pipe. I think I used 2.5 to the mufflers and 2 inch tail pipes.

 

Hey Patrick, spread the love with the rest of us Hilltoppers looking for custom exhaust! I am gonna dump my fenderwell headers on my CJ-6, and will be needing a custom setup.

 

I had inside the frame headers with cherry bombs on my 360, hated the headers, so when I went to a GM engine, I retained the stock cast iron manifolds and flowmaster 40 series mufflers, this was 8 years ago, whew where did the time go, anyway they have a pretty quiet idle but you get on it you will get the flowmaster sound!, fairly loud. Flowmaster has a unique sound, I like the sound but quiet would be nice sometimes, but then again it is a V8 Jeep, gotta love the sound! Note: this is not my daily driver so the novelty of the V8 never wears off.

I called Carmalito's and he quoted me about 275 + tax for glass packs, 325 + tax for turbo's and about 575 + tax for Flowmasters. That sound right?

 

How would you have them align the exhaust? Currently, its behind the back tire and bent 90 out. This good? Straight out the back? Before the back tire 90 out?

 

I would call someone else... That is very expensive unless it is stainless. Our local shops are a lot cheaper. Summit has the flowmasters around 80 bux a pop. So with pipe, thats $200 in parts or so?

 

My exhaust exits straight out the back and I can smell the exhaust when the top is off. I don't know if the smell would not be as bad if it 90 out behind the wheels or not.

 

80 bucks, and I want dual. Is the pipe 40 bucks or are you assuming just one muffler?

 

I figure the pipe isn't much more than $40 bux. Those prices are from summit. 4' of 2.5" pipe at summit is $12. So all the rest they are charging is labor. I realise their time is worth some cash but $375 for a few bends and install is pretty steep.

Just wanted to give an update on my search for the exhaust system. I was visiting my parents in Alamogordo and thought that since I was in a different area, I would price check what I wanted. Alamogordo, Las Cruces, and El Paso, TX, all quoted me almost the same price. $580 for dual flowmasters mufflers and total exhaust replacement from manifold back. Guess I will go with Carmalito's here in Espanola since he was recommended by quite a few people and he is in line with what I have been getting quoted from around the state.
